Is there an easier way to disable the flash for low-light photography than by disabling it in the "Setup" menu under "Speedlight options"?

If that is the easiest way, isn't there a way to map that to one of the user function buttons?

Yes simply do not press the spedlight release switch on the camera - much easier than using menus.

I guess the only reason I'm afraid of doing that is that when trying some close-up macro shots w/ the speedlight "closed", the flash still went off. That can't be good for the unit.

Is that behavior normal, by the way?

mine occasionally did that when i first got it and i noticed that even with the speedlight closed i didn't get the little "no flash" symbol all the time. for those times i didn't, lightly pressing the speedlight to the side got it where it belonged and the symbol came on. somewhere along the line it fixed itself, 'cause it hasn't done that for months.
