D80 "err"

My dad purchased his D80 with 18-200 VR a couple of months ago. With less than 300 frames taken, he started having problems:

• no focusing upon half push of shutter, or severly delayed (several seconds)
• if shutter is released at this point, photo is either not recorded, or "err" is displayed, or both
• this happens randomly
• when it is working, focusing happens slowly, takes 1/2 second or so after half push to "beep" for focus
• this is all in Program mode
• the lens has never been removed since he got it, and was working fine at first

Does this sound like body or lens problem?

It's on warranty, so we'll talk to Nikon, just a little worried that they might not find the problem once it's sent away.

Hi,

HAve yoyu TRIED another lens, or another setting? I'd do that first as part of your troubleshooting process. That way you MIGHT discover that it's maybe the lens, or just the camera. It depends what you try. Try to eliminate all possibilites first, even if ou have to borrow another lens from someone for a little bit, just as a test.

Yesterday out of complete frustration I went back and told them that this is random mostly in P mode but a couple time in auto mode. And of course the guy took pictures again and said the camera was fine. I said I couldn’t go from loving my D70 to hating a D80 I am not that bad of a photographer. I told him that I had been in to see Jesse several times. He said to leave the camera and he would talk to Jesse. Today I spoke to Jesse and he said to come down on Monday and he will work something out. Now at least I can bring this post in.

I was starting to think I was nuts because it kept happening so randomly. I can not believe that I have doubted myself for 6 months and have hated this camera. All along I thought is was me and that I made a huge mistake getting rid of my D70 and getting the D80.

I too had a problem with my D80 shutter with less than 300 shoots. See the details in the following thread. Eventually, it would not record anything, and at that point, Nikon fixed it. Good luck on your effort.
