D200 waiting lists and full payment in advance

One of the local dealers in the Boston area told me the only way to be on the waiting list for a D200 is to pay in full in advance. A different dealer told me they'd put me on a waiting list, but the more deposit I put down in advance the higher I'd be on the list, with full payment putting me at the top of the list.

Is this typical of what dealers are doing elsewhere?

Some UK dealers are asking for deposits, some for full payment. I'm on a list with neither.

Ritz takes your credit card number, probably puts
a block on the $ amount, but doesn't actually charge the card until
the product is shipped.
That seems to me to be a more reasonable policy than charging in advance.

Much as I'd like to support our local shops with this kind of purchase (substantial cost and no savings from the big distributers), I might have to make an exception this time...

When I was on the list for a D70 the store didn't require anything but my phone number. Now the same store has asked for $500 down to be on the list for the D200. The charge showed up on my credit card the next day.

If a dealer would do that with me I'd say, good by and thank you.

Ritz or Wolf takes preorders without any charge untill the item ships. Free shipping and no tax. They reserve the money on the credit card, but you are not charged and don't pay interest.

Taking advantage of a customer like that is unfair and I would never support that.

everyone says we should support our local dealer. In reality they are often very arrogant and this example shows exactly why I have no desire to support bad service.

Just because a shop is local doesn't make it good. I support good service and products, nothing else.

I buy a lot of my gear from my local dealer. I am one who believes in supporting my local dealer when ever possible because otherwise they won't be there the next time I want to get my hands on a live product.

When I bought the D70 I could put my name on a list, or put down a deposit or pay for the camera in full. Depending on what I did would put me higher on the list for the first unit in the store.

I for one had no problem with this. There is no loyality now days as evident from the stories of guys on this forum who's camera breaks and goes and buys a new one then takes it back after his shoot.

So I don't blame any dealer who ask for a deposit. This is the only way they can tell you are serious and not just kicking the tires. Especially with the release of a new product like the D200 where they can sell everyone they get.

Granted every dealer is different but most people never bother to build a relationship. I have worked at making sure I know the owner and just about everyone that works there. I give them as much business as I can and I send everyone who ask to them. When I have a question I get honest informed information. Also when I need some thing in a hurry they are there to help.

So may be some of you don't like your local dealer but I also would suggest that if you take time to build a relationship in the long run both of you will win.

Luckley my local store Chord Camera has let me make payments to them.I have saved 1900.00 US dollers. I think that should get me something. Thanks Chord.

You might want to try calumet in cambridge... I called around to the usual suspects in Boston (Hunts, Zeff, etc...) and I liked what I heard best at Calumet.

Hi Jim,

I live in Brookline.

If you're willing to order without handling the D200 first, I suggest onecall.com.

I ordered mine Tuesday afternoon and expect to receive it later this month.

$1700, no tax, 12 month grace period to pay with no interest if you use a onecall card.

I've ordered several lenses from them, TVs etc... Never a problem.

Good luck!

Why do you "expect to receive later this month" when Nikon is not shipping them out until mid-December at the earliest?

I've had two dealers tell me they expected to receive their first shipment on or around November 27. They must know something different than the "official" announcement?

Hi Jim. Not at my dealer in Toronto. I paid a reasonable deposit and was told I was in the first shipment. But then again, I have bought there before and have met my sales rep!

Seems suspicious. What is a "firm" order. Will Nikon require proof of payment by the customer from the dealer before they will ship them a camera? Maybe you guys know something I don't, but in my corrsespondence with NPS, they made it pretty clear that as of today, no one would be getting any D200s until mid December. This was of course quantified with the usual "things could change" Not Ritz, B&H or me!

I hope you are right as I have had an order (not firm, but not flaccid either ;-) ) in since this time last year. "When it gets here, I want one for sure and probably two." He knows my CC # and knows my cell number.

I wasn't going to mention the names of the two shops I was referring to in my first post, but you did. Obviously we were given similar stories. THanks -- I'll try Calumet.
