ALL THE PARTICIPANTS OF CHALLENGE 8

Since there were only a very few people who actually voted in this category, I felt that I would not declare any one “most improved” but state that each of you know how you have improved with these challenges that should be reward enough. It is my hope, however, that as we get higher in the number of challenges, this category, if still present, will be a very important and special one for the individual that gets selected.

The Last Words…

I would like to say to all the those who participate in these challenges, that it has been an honor and a privilege ( and some work…;)) to have been the host of Challenge 8. I myself have felt that I have learned a lot from the STF and seen myself improve tremendously. Since my first entry, Dark Angel…to Pieces of Me to Do No Harm… I can see that I feel in a little more control of the camera than vice versa.

I would like to be the first to congratulate John Zwink for a wonderful entry in Too-Late Commute and as the next host of Challenge 9. John…I hereby hand the digital baton to you… I wish you all the best.

Thank you and congrats to all the celebrated artists here and in the challenges…you people all deserve the praise….

Massive round of applause for debadguy, a.k.a degoodguy, for hosting this challenge with such professionalism.

I don't know debadguy, but it seems clear that his time is very precious. It tells you something when such a person is so gracious to donate this time to us all and for the love of photography.

I appreciate the time you spent to keep the ball rolling. It was a good topic and I know I personally streached a little farther in this one. It didn't show up in this challenge, but I am hoping to apply the things I learned into the next challenge. Again thank you very much and I hope you can sit back and enjoy the next challenge :-)

Me too, ditto! I hope you enjoyed hosting the challenge and that it wasn't "too" much work.

This turned out to be a good topic and elicited many different approaches to the challenge of motion.

And a big hand to the people who took the time to vote!

Dee

I was keeping an informal count of votes (unscientific) and noticed that a lot of photos were close in votes. If you wouldn't mind, could you share the top ten photos?

Thanks,

Dee

Wow. Hot damn, even. :-)

I can't say I expected this to happen, less than six weeks after I got my first digital camera (though, what a camera it is). I was actually in kind of a bad mood tonight, but not anymore!

* * *

I'd like to thank my F707, my tripod, my... oh wait. Nevermind. Thanks to my dad, really. Oh, thanks to Dee for the suggestion to rotate the picture a little--I had overlooked the precise alignment when I first posted it.

* * *

Information about the shot, for those that may have missed it the first couple times: the exposure was 10 seconds at F/8, ISO 100. No extra light of any type. Taken full manual. 15.3 mm focal length, focused at infinity. Rotated and cropped slightly, then used Auto Levels, and that was that.

* * *

Brief bio on myself and my cameras, so long as I have the chance:

I'm a senior in computer engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. I have been into photography a fair bit for a long time.

First camera was a Canon Mega Zoom 76, which I still have (and use when I don't want to carry something larger).

First camera I learned to use was an Olympus OM-1 (my father's). It was a popular camera, but for those that don't know, it's an all-manual SLR (only electronic part is the lightmeter, which eventually failed). Had a complement of lenses and a Vivitar flash.

Later my dad got a Canon Elan II, which is a wonderful camera, I think. A Canon Speedlite 540EZ and Tamron 28-300 lens round out the package. That's the camera I've used most, really. Ironically, its light meter broke also, but it's since been repaired. The 540EZ flash is unbelievable for a handheld unit, and the Tamron lens is very convenient, though not very fast of course.

Then, December 7th, for my birthday, I got the F707 (after much research and debate, including some typical newbie questions here a while back). Picked up a 128 MB MS, a couple filters, case, and tripod just after Christmas, and came back to school ready to go. A week later, I went out late at night to take some pictures, with the Challenge only partially in mind, and Too-Late Commute was captured.

* * *

Anyway, I'm not all that experienced here, and so I'll probably be getting in touch with debadguy about what to do next. I may very well start a thread to ask for suggestions before the next contest gets under way, but I think this one went quite smoothly (I haven't been around for any of the previous ones).

Thanks again,

John Zwinck

Congrats to John! Well deserved. Also thanks to debadguy, I think they get tougher every time. 198 entries, wow!

Boy, there must have been a bunch in that 15-20 range.

Thanks and Congrats again!

Tnaks debadguy for your very professional job !
This was a great challenge !

Congratulations to all the winners and all the participants !

concerning results, I would love to see the extensive results published ...

Why ?

Because, even if I'm far from the winners, I got some points, I am proud of it ! and would appriciate to see my name in the results :-)

and I am sure I'm not the only one ! (at least Dee is asking for the same thing ...)

I understand this is extra work for you, but we could help !

I didn't get a chance to editorialize the results in the original message because I wanted to keep to the point...i.e. the results. But now that I am just another of the regular guys again I can say that Challenge was quite tough to tally. Not only because of the number of categories and entries but because how different yet similar the voters were. For instance, there were 56 nominees for electing a new host...30 were in the most impressed category. That means that you people thought that 30 entries deserved to win! Wow! That's a testament to not only the high quality of the photographs but also shows me how differently we see the same things. In contrast to this , the votes for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th places differed by 0-2 points ( that's points not votes)! Here we see how similar we are in our votes for specific artwork. This only reinforces to me the importance of due diligence in reviewing and VOTING. 1 vote could have moved 6th place to 2nd place! Although I understand that the focus of these challenges is not about winning or losing, we all desire some kind of recognition or positive feedback ( call it what you like) and it seems a shame that two entries can be 1 vote apart and yet only one of those can get acclaimed. That is why I like Dee's suggestion to name the top ten entries.

The first three you already know...

4th Walking Alone (20), Going Down (20), Motion Sickness (20)

5th Just for Fun (16)

6th Contrasts in Motion (15), Blue Hummer (15)

7th Extreme Banking (13), Flight (13)

8th Elijah the Prophet - Slow Motion (12)

9th Taking Flight ( 9), Camera Shy (9), $340 Billion for Defense (9)

10th Ludicrous Speed (8), Sunset Walk (8), Struggling with Myself (8), Gentle Breeze (8),
Seven lads a leaping (8), Alizarin Crimson (8), Tepus Fugit (8)

I hope this gives just recognition to llerthose who deserve it...

Yippeeeee!!

I see I made it into the top 10 with my Tempus Fugit! I'm not bragging, just delighted to know I achieved something for sitting up late during the night trying to capture my shot.

It seems like I got in through the backdoor because I'm the last to be mentioned.

I really enjoyed this challenge, and would like to thank all participants, posters, exhibitors, voters, managers, viewers etc. Thanks debadguy!

I'm itching to start working on the next challenge!

hi,

first of all thanks debadguy for your great job of hosting and counting :))

and then a big congrats to John Zwink for winning, is really a great shot, i really liked it for day one, even with the slight angle (that i didnt see :).

i too, like the idea of seeing the hole list of vote's, as i think was in top 2 at one point (a quick head count when scanning the votes :) nail biting eh LOL

well till i also voted for John's great picture, and also i would like to see how other did as i also voted for JNL's picture just for fun, and i saw that others did too. and also i could see that A Van Beek for Night Falls was getting many vote's.

So i did a little count last night to see first of all where i was, still in top 5 with a change or ???, as i had this great idea for a topic for the next challenge, well never mind next time :)) but even with a count on paper, it would be nice to see the result in a post, to have it kinda official that you are number 7 or 4 or ....

im glad that Bella attack wasent in the same part as none of us would have had a change a truely great shot, my hat goes off for A Van Beek.
