On behalf of the host, Nic Hanekom (AKA Nicholas J), I'd like to thank the participants of Challenge 4, "Shadows", for a very compelling set of images. Great work by all.

Voting starts now and closes at 11:59AM GMT on Tuesday (48 hours). I will post the results an hour thereafter. Click here to see the Close of Voting time for your locale... http://timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?day=2&month=12&year=2003&hour=23&min=59&sec=0&p1=0

And here are the galleries for Challenge 4, "Shadows"...

CALL FOR HELP : To ensure an accurate set of results, I'd like a volunteer to count votes for comparison purposes. Carpenter's Creed: Measure twice... Can I get a hand from someone? Given the close of voting time, someone from North America (or a European night owl) will work best.

VOTING GUIDELINES…
  • Vote within this thread only.
  • Anyone may vote. You do not need to have an entry in either gallery to vote.
  • Key point: It's not too late to leave comments as you browse. :-)
  • Please vote in both Eligible and Exhibition galleries.
  • You may vote for a maximum of 5 photos in each gallery, and you have 10 points to use per gallery. Maximum points allowed per photo is 5.
  • You do not need to award all 10 points, but you will likely dilute your vote if you award less.
  • You can specify as many Honorable Mentions as you like. If you run out of votes before you run out of images you liked, please let people know.
  • Feel free to include comments with your votes. Let folks know what you liked about their images.
  • Please vote for photos other than your own.
  • Here is the format for voting…

Eligible

5 Light and Shadows by Vikas

o I must say that this picture attract me eye the most. Shadows are very subtle but the tone of of it does it for me. Nice work Vikas.

3 Pump house by Rob Patterson

o This picture has a very old cachet. I like the way shadows are running on the old wood deck and wall.

2 Bound By Shadows by Mark J

o Fabulous color range. Very nice shadow work. Crisp looking. Only reason for not selecting it as my prefered picture is the edited out "UN" letters.

Eligible Gallery
3 Glass shadows by Mark J

Nice lighting of a "standard" shot through the curtains. This has been done 11 billion times to the 17th power but not all handle the lighting as well as this.
3 Sun Flower by Bernard Maltais

I actually like this better than the "thinking" one but it needs some reflected light on the flowers. A bit too dark.
4 Thinking by Bernard Maltais

Done many times, but when the opportunity presents itself the shot must be taken. It's asking to be done. Too bad a catchlight in the eyes from a........whatever wasn't there.

Eligible Honorable mention
Disney Concert Hall by Jeff Aragaki
Bound by shadows by Mark J

For some reason I like the Glass shadows better even though I believe in the keep it simple concept which this one follows more closely.
Her True Colors by Mark Hensley

Ok, I like cats! ;) Different angle and a bit less clutter so the eye wasn't drawn from the subject.
Light and Shadows by Vikas

Very, very nice studio shot. I'd give it a 5 for studio work but feel it exceeds the control that the majority of other challengers have in their possession and is therefore putting others at a disadvantage. Falls in line with the idea that voters should determine whether or not too much darkroom work was being used.

Exhibition Gallery
4 False Adobe

Excellent use of shadow (the subject of this ballgame) to be a prime part of the composition. Causes me to ponder and also imagine where this might be.
3 Whirlpool of Shadows by Mark J

Good job but makes me want to see the light setup to arrange this shot differently. Perhaps different treatment of the shadows in Photoshop?
3 Moon Shadow by Mark J

Not a lot to say. Is the blue from purposely altered white balance? Either in camera or out.

Honorable Mention
Hayfield by Teapot
Man's Best Friend by Robert
Inner Sanctum by theblue
Sphix by Steve Huff

First of all apologies to all for not adding any comments to the photos in this competition. My PC has been down for almost 2 weeks while I upgraded to a new processor, motherboard, RAM and hard-drives. Had lots of problems which I eventually tracked to a faulty power supply. I only got it going yesterday in time to add a quick entry and have a row with my wife for spending to much time working on it ...but that's another story.

Anyway my votes are:

Eligible
4 for Antlers by Garrett Lau
3 for Shadow of Time by Denise Wall
2 for Hangin Around by Tim Dahl
1 for Unreal by Rob McGlade

Exhibition
5 for Triple Portrait by Steve Huff
3 for Daisies by Upsidedown
2 for Moon Shadow by Mark J.

ELIGIBLE Gallery: http://www.pbase.com/cslr_challenge/eligible_4

4 pts: Shadow of time by Denise Wall
...I had a similar(ish) idea but didn't manage to get the shot
4 pts: Unreal by Rob McGlade
...because I didn't realise it was a toy!
3 pts: Urban Escape by Cathy Phillips
...for perfect composition.

Honorable Mentions…
  • Soft Shadows by Cathy Phillips
EXHIBITION Gallery: http://www.pbase.com/cslr_challenge/exhibition_4
pts: [ Image Title_] by [ Artist ] > > repeat up to 5 images/10 points
5 pts: Moon Shadow by Mark J
...just a really striking image. I love it.
3 pts: Sphinx by Steve Huff

...perfect use of the cat, if I din't know cats better I'd have thought it was posing.
2 pts: Triple Portrait by Steve Huff
...love the composition.

Well done all on what I found quite a difficult challenge.

Here goes, first time voting in any of these. Hope to also submit photos to future challenges when I get my camera later this month.

ELIGIBLE Gallery
3pts: Shadow of Time by Denise Wall
3pts: Golden Hour by Garrett Lau
2pts: The Faraway Tree By David Chow
2pts: Thief by Ed Hahn

Honourable Mention
Capitol.jpg Austin, TX by Victor Engel
Shadow Dancing by Ed Hahn
Her True Colors by Mark Hensley
Bound By Shadows by Mark J

The four photos that received points, to me, really told a story, rather than just being shadows for the sake of shadows. No offense to anyone, I'm sure every photo told a story to the photographer, I just couldn't see it myself.

Denise's photo was by far the most striking in the imagery, however the composition struck me as being a bit off. Ed's Thief put me right in the scene however the noise and heavy drop-shadow detracted from the overall effect.

I also chose Garrett's and David's for aesthetic appeal and because they stirred my imagination on several levels.

Honourable mention for the cute and whimsical kitten, the impressive Capitol building, the very spare simplicity of the dancing shadows and Mark's bottle, that really deserves to be an ad.

EXHIBITION Gallery
4pts: Shadow of Despair by Denise Wall
4pts: Moon Shadow by Mark J
2pts: bat'n'ball by John Brain

Can we give them all 5 points?

Honourable Mention
The Shadow of Attraction by Fremiet
Whirlpool Of Shadows by Mark J

John, as a tennis player you got me straight off with that image. Quite sure it's not called a bat though. I tried a similar concept to Shadow of Despair myself. Denise shows me how far off the mark I was. And gives me heights to aim for. And moon shadow is just amazing. Straight out of an extraterrestrial movie, but also the far more simple concept of isolation. Great stuff Mark!

Honourable mention to the other two for the creativity and vision that went into their making.

Great work to everyone who participated!

Here are my eligible votes:

5 pts - Inner Quad by Garrett Lau
Great use of the arches, light, and shadows!

3 pts - Shadow of Time by Denise Wall
Very creative idea, and well done!

2 pts - San Diego Train Station1 by bee1000
Love the use of the pillar and the shadow cast upon it. Great shot.
