I cannot get camera connect to work reliably with my R5 II over wifi

So far:

I have tried using the Bluetooth connection. This works reliably. But as soon as I try to see images, when it tries to upgrade the connection to wifi, things become iffy. Occasionally it works, but more often it just keeps waiting to establish wifi connection which never finishes.

I have tried cleaning up connections and pairing from both phone and camera end and trying a direct wifi connection from camera as mentioned in the manual. After selecting wifi, I am expected to see ssid details, but instead the camera just shows "Busy... Please wait." message forever. The only way to come out of that is to press shutter button / recycle power. While it's busy, I can see camera SSID showing up, but I don't know the password to connect

I have also tried to set manual connection details, where you can set the password, but trying to do that again leads me to forever wait screen when I am supposed to see a list of network names and set their details

Has anyone been stuck on this while using wifi? Any tips on something I might be missing / misunderstanding?

If it helps, I am using a Samsung galaxy S21+ with latest camera connect app. But I am not sure that is the issue since I also cannot get wifi details to show up when initiating menu fro camera end

If this is about using the camera as access point: Camera Connect will fill in the password for you.

If you want to use an existing wife network, you need to pick "use a different method" in the menu. That should allow you to connect to an existing network.

The big improvement over the original R5 (and R7 and R8) is that you can reuse the wifi network settings in different options, so configuring it using https://cam.start.canon/en/C017/manual/html/UG-06_Network_0160.html should show your network when you do the "connect to phone/tablet" dance again.

Another big improvement is that from the camera, I can now have one BT and one wifi (existing network) option to connect to my phone, nicely seperated!

The first time I tried it, it showed "Busy" for a looooooong time, I removed the battery, put it back in and wifi has worked without major issues ever since. I don't know if the battery pull and it working are related, but that's what I did :)

So, went through resetting both ends, u pairing etc. Eventually what worked was:
  • Disable Bluetooth on camera
  • Manual SSID setup on camera. The busy eventually yielded on one attempt and I was able to setup ssid and password for using camera as AP
  • Once this was done, the wifi connection menu now comes up immediately with the list of connections, so I also setup connection to my home AP
  • After this, connecting from camera connect works in both modes
Fingers crossed, hope this doesn't go bust on a random day (connect app has done that to me in the past)

FWIW, Camera Connect WiFi has worked fine with my R5m2 and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (Android V14, OneUI V6.1).
