I shoot mostly jpgs and use Apple Photos to manage and edit.

Before uploading, only thumbnails are shown on the screen. Please can you suggest a method or software that I can use to allow me to view photos at full screen size to help culling before importing to the computer.

(I don't do much burst photography but quite often take several similar shots with a view to choosing the best.)

I don't think there's a workaround within Photos to view the full pre-import images. Even Image Capture requires the file to be downloaded first. In the Mac App Store though, there is a free program called PhotoscapeX that works well as a viewer and editor, though it hasn't been updated in some time. It may be what you are looking for without having to pay for image-viewing software. I'm sure others will suggest similar programs.

Preview (I'm assuming you have a card reader)

- its built into MacOS

- it will allow you to view images full size directly from the card

- it enables culling

- it allows accepted images to be sent directly to Photos

You say "mostly" jpgs - for everything else the answer will depend what formats you are using

Another option is to use Gallery View in the finder. It does require downloading first but it works with JPEGs, supported RAWs (not compressed Fuji), and gives a bit of the EXIF alongside the preview. There's a film strip at the bottom.

It's free, built into the system and allows culling.

Thats a good alternative to Preview - and it doesn't require any downloading.

With a card reader the images can be directly viewed and culled.

Many thanks to you all for your suggestions. I'll give them a try.

Just hit Command-4 in any Finder window.
