Nuttall's woodpecker tearing up the bark in the maple tree in our front yard, looking for insects.

1. Barking Up the Wrong Tree
1. Barking Up the Wrong Tree

And then pretending it had nothing to do with the damage

2. I didn't do that
2. I didn't do that

Both taken yesterday morning before the rains but the sky was very overcast. Also, through double paned window, so the little loss of sharpness and detail gave the images a softer look.

C&C welcome - thanks for watching

Amusing sequence.

I like the diagonal element to the composition, with the splash of colour in the left frame.

I feel like in the second shot the bird could be a little more left, and a little lower in the frame but I realise that could be difficult, especially if you're in burst mode. But that said, the right hand composition is probably a little more original, and the slanting branches lead the eye to the bird.

Both very nice images.

Thanks Nate - and also I appreciate you taking the time to analyze the composition. For the second shot, I deliberately put the bird in the upper right because of how it was facing.

The diffused light was really nice to get.

Nice shots! I like the second one.

I might have cropped that one just a little more and put the bird's eye right at an intersection point of the rule of thirds. I think it would have drawn the eye better to the bird.

Yeah, the light is great.

And I see what you mean now about how the bird's facing...that position does suit it well.

I had tried that, but then the fork in the lower branches is obscured and does not make for a good composition. I stay by the general principle of rule of thirds but sometimes you just can’t get exactly there.
