archos 604 wifi user?

anybody here own this 604 wifi? hows the performance when doing web browsing? battery life? hope to hear some feedbacks from people who actually uses this PVR.

Hi,
I got my 604 WIFI a week ago.

Positive opinion:

Fantasic sensitive screen, audio delivery is great and overall quality and manufacturing standards are high. Design is very convenient since it provides the sensitive screen which I thing key to the use of the PMP.

WIFI works perfectly, and setup, to my surprise was fairly easy as long as you know the numbers... WAP/WEP and other mystirious and odd codes.

I have not experienced many different WIFI accesses besides the one at home, but from what I have been told it seems to be fairly reliable and not too treacky.

Internet access is performing very well. Obviously surfing on a 4.3' screen is not as convenient as what you expect from you portable but quite effective for simple mail check/write/send operations. Zooming and writing with the virtual keyboard is fairly convenient.

Connections to the PC is OK and it does not require any thing else besides the plugging of the USB 2 cord.It's recognize as a mass drive if you require so, and all operations in and out to the 604 are handled through the PC

with very staightforward file exchange features (whatever the type Music or picture).

Very neet picture views with bright screen delivery. Convenient Zoom I believe 5 times. Realy a nice and efficient way to check the pictures quality, but Jpeg only.

Weight/size issue: to my surprise I gym with the 604 in my pocket with no trouble. Obviously twice the Ipod weight, but not a real probleme to me at least.

Battery life is fair and from what I can judge so far in line with the technical specs (Music and picture viewing only), but WIFI pumps a lot of energy so be carefull . I am thinking about a second battery for travel purpose with Internet use.

Neutral opinion:

I have not used it so far for movies recording/viewing, but the short movie sample which comes with the engine gives a very sharp image.

Negative opinion:

Lots of options , cables, docking stations, ... and I do not quite understand the design of 3 different stations (all 3 would cost you nearly 200 € / 300$...) unless specifically for that very reason to make you spent an additional "few" $ ......

Combersome set up of the various cables and you need a Uhaul to carry the all necessary wires since you always wonder if you choose the right on.

Additional battery, as I said is not helping the weight of the fulle set you may need to cary in your briefcase.

Main concern and disappintment so far, is its uncompatibility with my camera (Canon 20d) which apparently cannot be recognized as a mass driver by the 604 (I am still checking with Canon on that one) because of an unappropriate transfer protocole. I knew in the first place that viewing RAW pictures was not possible and I did acccept the principle, although it may become an issueto me. in the long run

Conclusion:

I hesitated quite for some time between IPOD/Vosonic 8360/ Zen Vision W and Archos.

Quality wise I do not regret the decision, but the lack of picture down load makes it a real issue, so I wonder for the next 3 days if I am sending the all thing back and get the Vosonic which fullfills the all requirement s probably to the expense of screen quality, manufacturing standards and obviously WIFI/internet capabilities.

Things do not come the easy way in this wolrd !!

you don't need all 3 since they will duplicate each others functions.

The base station does everything, record video/audio with scheduling, remote control, in/out composite/svid/rgb/component/audio to tv, automatic charging etc.

The docking adaptor is for travel and does usb host/slave and comes with an ac adaptor that charges much faster than the usb charge.

The travel adaptor is for on the road video/audio recording and is supplied as standard with the helmet camera.

So the last 2 just duplicate functions of the full base station so you do not need to take the bulkier base station on the road.

Hello

Once you bought the card reader were you able to transfer files from the Canon 20D thru the card reader with the docking adaptor? Could you save raw images even if you could not view them?

I purchased the 604 wifi for the purpose of traveling without the laptop and being able to transfer pictures from the memory cards to use later. I wanted to save jpegs as well as raw images.

I just ordered the docking adapter and I have a card reader. Hopefully this is all I need for this to work for me.

The "wifi" portion of my Archos 604 WIFI worked for exactly 1.5 days. I have not been able to attach to another network since as the 604 says No Network found.

According to one of the user forums this is not an uncommon occurence. I'm not sure that all the "bugs" have been worked out yet. Google the forums and you will see.

After talking to Archos it was decided that a return of the unit for a new on would be the best course of action. Also, when it was working it saw two netwroks where my laptop saw six.

But. When it was working, I was able to "stream" video files off my PC, throught the access point onto my TV and was impressed...no dropouts or blockiness or stuff like that.

Yesterday I turn on my 604 Wifi...goto the browser...it searches for a network....and finds my local access point.

Has been workin since.

Strange. But Im I'm happy.

under repair and format tools there should be a rest wifi configuration function, this usually works but archos have a further fix in the next firmware according to one forum.

If you are looking into the device for photography and want a single self contained device with an exceptional screen, the Epson is your best choice. It also does an excellent job playing movies.

If you want a less expensive (although after required accessories it gets up there) and are not as concerned about the screen being "exceptional" and don't mind loading images from flash cards via an accessory, then the Archos is probably a good choice. It also has the ability (through accessories) to record video and audio, something some may find appealing.

I chose the Epson P3000 as it's screen cannot be beat and the performance is very good.

just wondering how many megahertz does the archos wifi have? is it 500 megahertz or faster? my Dash phone is only about 200megahertz and its super slow in opening webpages usinf wifi.
