I've never done any old photo restoration in Photoshop, I decided to give it a try but my results are less than what I'd hoped for. I've seen some pretty amazing work but I'm falling short with just using the cloning tool and dust and scratch removal. Anyone want to give this a try? I need some inspiration. Here's the original I have to work with.

what size original or scan file do you have to work on. This one on site is too small. Send me orig scan if possible (if I don't have to spend half day download) I'll give it a bit of a shot, probably not all the way...Dave

Send me your email address. I scanned this 5x7 @ 300 resolution and I put it on here 5x7 @ 72. Tell me what you want. Thanks!

levels
duplicate layer--multiply mode
coloring in color mode
blurred skin, smudged skin
sharpened eyes nose mouth
lots of cloning

Marlene,

If this picture is really important to you, I would suggest having it scanned at a professional lab. They can get the most from the original and in the process can do quite a bit of cleaning. You would then have a much easier job of getting it touched up and the folks here would have a much larger file to work with. The end results would be well worth it.

Kent, this is terrific! Better than I've come up with so far and great inspiration for me. I love how you handled the tie.....that's been my biggest problem. I've been able to do ok with the jacket but the tie has been giving me fits. Could you tell me how you got the tie looking so good? My other problem area has been the forehead and again.......you did a great job on that too. Thanks! And please....let me (us) know what you did here.

Hi VG,

Well my idea behind this is for the challenge of it......to learn more about handling difficult retouches. I've made a couple tries and plan to try more. I posted here to see how others would deal with it and to inspire me. This is a very small picture that came from one of those photo booths, it also got laminated at some point and the lamination is separating in places causing nasty spotting.......I think it was put through a washing machine. Just having some fun trying to fix it. Thanks!

Hi Isabel,

Yes....the tie was tough. I had to use the lasso tool and kinda guess where the tie was and then use curves on it to darken it just a little. Then I had to select the areas of the shirt on each side of the tie and whiten it up. Seemed to work. Thanks for trying, it's kinda fun.

Yours is the best of the lot so far
really
I coouldn't save the tie at all, cloned it out completely.
Your forehead is great, what's the problem?
I might try to combine two attempts, if you don't mind i might try
to colorize yours a bit

where is this soldier from?
this is from the australian military handbook:

"Navy (USN) Unit Citations are, unlike Army or Air Force, in so much that the citation emblem is a ribbon and worn whilst in uniform on the left side, Army/RAAF emblems are worn on the right when in uniform.

Below is a copy of the Army Dress Manual in regards to the wearing of Citations: REFERENCE ARMY STANDING ORDERS FOR DRESS( ASOD)"
