I am upset that that Pentax has given us a K20D firmware update that does not let me use PEF files in my RAW editors of choice, Bibble and Capture one. I feel they should Immediately put out another update to fix this problem. Now I am forced to use my old reliable DS again.

Where is Ted, apart from showing us stupid ads or rebate programs pentax has for a very limited group (education rebate) can he help get a major problem to a lot of users fixed. I doubt it.

How Pentax handles this mess will tell me a lot about the character of the company.

My wife is laughing herself silly these days as she wanted me to get a Nikon D300 instead the K20D.

Not a good thing, I agree. I use Spix and don't know what would happen there, but I don't intend to find out. No new firmware here, if all it does is Hot Pixels, I've spent hours trying to find some without success, so until they give me a firmware upgrade that will give me some, I'm not interested.

Hmm...have you tried the 2 sec timer? They are there, trust me - otherwise Pentax wouldn't have issued the FW upgrade ;-) I had a few, now I dont.

Of course if you can't see them, then more power to you :-)

Batch conversion to change header in EXIF.
Not sure exactly how to do this but see this thread:
..........

1.01 only changed the company name from 'Pentax Corporation' to 'Pentax', which also confuse Picasa

Yes, the files now opens fine in Bibble

Can you blame Pentax since Pentax Corporation no longer exists as a legal entity...
Actually I guess, if you think about it, it's the original EXIF that was wrong.

It's Pentax's fault (I guess) that a firmware fix was needed. However, pretty much every camera has a couple of iterations of firmware, so an update was coming eventually.

The raw processors have different ways of determining the file format. It's their responsibility to upgrade their software. Your ire is misdirected, IMHO. Still, I'm sure it's frustrating.

Even bad photography can be fun :)

I tried to use their email thing on the Pentax imaging web site but being Pentax the I can't make it work. Next I will try to find Ted's email address. I tell you this is no fun with my wife laughing in the back ground.

Silkypix works fine on RAW PEFs of 1.01 K20D files.

Now that we know there is a problem with 3rd part raw software I think Pentax should put out a firmware fix turning back the new header to the old header.

Pentax has such a small market share that companies like Bibble are not worried about losing Pentax users and are in no hurry to update their software, but then if Nikon or Canon did this there would be a Bibble updated software yesterday.

In the long run, I don't think Pentax has a lot of worries about losing Bibble customers; in the end Bibble is far from being a software leader in PP or RAW handling - and as others have typed, it is not Pentax's responsibility to change/update/alter RAW formats to the liking of a very limited software user base... it is very much Bibble's job on the 3rd party end. If anything, Bibble should be losing your business - or incurring your wrath.

Bull Sh*t, Pentax PEF files worked fine in the original firmware with Bibble and capture one. There is no way I know to roll back to the old software so now I am screwed. As I mentioned before Pentax has such a small market share so that fixing this problem is not a priority with third party software makers.

I am not ready to give up my K20D anytime soon, but when I feel Pentax has screwed its customers I will speak out.

I have emailed Eric at bibble. But Bibble is but one program affected. I surely hope Pentax does not want me to use their software. I think everyone agrees it is cr*p.

In the free software world things of this nature are often fixed in a matter of hours or days. If not you have the information to fix it yourself or hire someone to do it for you. Think the raw hack for Canon A or G series point and shoots that Canon said could only shoot jpeg. The G7 only shot jpeg, then the hack, then the G9 could shoot raw.

In a decade free software came out of nowhere and established a foothold in the commercial world largely because it's good enough, and the developers pay attention to their user base. The user base can largely take of itself if motivated. The secret is to not have a secret software recipe and restrictive license. Let everyone contribute according to their ability. IMHO off.

Definition: Hack is not Crack. Hack means a curious student investigating possibilities. Crack means a person with the same talents but with a motivation not in the best interest of the larger user community.
