In Windows 7, updates usually give you a list of several updates, often divided into 'Important' and 'Optional'. You can install all or some, and you can hide some so you never see them again (with some exceptions).

Is there anything like that in Win10 Pro? I know you can defer (for a while) updates, but I've don't remember reading if there is any finer degree of control.

For instance, can you select some updates to install now and defer others? Or is it an 'all or nothing' - you either take or defer a whole package? And I assume 'hiding' isn't an option at all, since you will have to install the updates sooner or later.

Thanks. As I had feared, pretty much 'all or nothing', with the exception of deferring. :-x
Until recently I'd have said that I found that no issue, as updates had always gone without major problems for me.

That was until 1809. Microsoft installed that on 3 of my machines before they pulled it. I did not lose any files (and I have back-ups anyway) but I have been affected by a number of other bugs in 1809, which have not yet been fixed by further updates.

From the trade press, I gather that Microsoft have severely scaled back their software testing. Certainly 1809 was a pile of poo.

Microsoft's Software-as-a-Service has become Software-as-a-Disservice. They need to launch new builds much more carefully, and perhaps go down to one a year with much more testing before roll-out.

Windows 10 is the gift that keeps on giving.

It would be possible to at least partially alleviate this kind of problem - go back to allowing something of the same kind of control over updates as is the case in Win7.

Break up updates into at least security and features. Let users decide which ones to install and when - if ever.

But it seems that MS has decided that users aren't smart enough to take that kind of responsibility for their own systems.

Perhaps MS's experience with older versions of Windows led them to this conclusion. But is this approach really causing them fewer problems?

Over the past weekend I have been jumping through hoops setting up a new (Crucial MX500) SSD and have been revisiting some of my old haunts.

Wow it is really revealing that the general consensus just a few years ago was so completely different to how it is today. Here on researching how to move the Temp Folder over to the previous HDD in order not to unnecessarily write to the notoriously limited lifespan of SSD's, on Microsoft's own forums here is a classic Comment on their forum (dated 2010):

"What I do NOT accept is the MS statement above on maintenance. This attitude of MS simply to DECIDE how we have to handle OUR data is completely inappropriate. It's not acceptable at all..." (reference: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...ifferent/565f16a5-e5ed-43c9-8422-4f56aebb296e)

It's so disheartening to see the 180° flipped change in attitude today. This was "back in the day" when WE had CONTROL of OUR data!

Another comment just further down (and your jaw must drop at the absolute flippant "freedom of speech" that reigned supreme less than a decade ago. Right there dealing with Microsoft Tech 'Support' on their own official forum someone just FREELY links to a website called 'Windows 7 Hacker'. Still there, undeleted. Today I will probably get a private message from a Mod regarding this very "antagonizing" post:

"Use regedit to change the location of the user sub folders and the root users folder.
http://www.windows7hacker.com/index...e-user-profile-default-location-in-windows-7/"

FREEDOM OF SPEECH. NO PRIVACY CONCERNS. 8 YEARS AGO!!

It looks like everything started changing 3 years ago. Fast forward to today and people have just accepted without question that "there is no privacy any more, deal with it and move on". "With so much cyber crime and terrorism they need to watch over us to make sure we are safe".

Remove these windows 7/8 KB updates to stop windows 10 like spying

Link doesn't work.
This one?

It had the parentheses attached. Works now. The comments on the Reddit are pretty telling too.

This is what puzzles me so much - that users, even sophisticated users, are willing to give up so much control of their systems. And some denigrate anyone who is puzzled by or object to this, as if it is obvious we should not only accept it but be grateful.

Thanks.

Do you want to move your default folders, like user files or temp directory?
Thank you very much for offering to assist Robert, it was a straight forward procedure with answers found here. I am able to move Temp Folders to a Partition on the HDD, tested and works fine using the method linked here:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...-another/19f13330-dde1-404c-aa27-a76c0b450818

The Default Folders I have also figured out, but never use them anyway. Before the SSD the 1TB HDD was always partitioned with C: separate from D: Now I have like 7 Partitions on there (3 for Linux, 1 for Temp, the big chunk for Data and a matching in size one if and when the SSD starts to die so I can clone the trimmed OS if ever the need arises.

Thank you again!

The hoops I had to jump through which drove me mentally insane was the OS wouldn't boot on the new SSD. After reading all the commands such as Rebuild BCD, BootRec, EFI, etc for over 24 hours it turned out to be as simple as deleting the original OS (Windows 7) on the HDD.

I'm telling ya Bill! There ain't many of us freedom thinkers around any more. And we are ostracized for speaking as such. Everyone is so hellbent on looking towards the future at all this 'mesmerizing' tech leaving only a few of us behind feeling perplexed, those of us who are keeping it real and remembering our roots. Truly puzzling! The Apple 1984 Commercial showed it knew all along the "road map" and where all "this" would lead us to...

With Windows 10 major updates, I've found that the temp folder path gets set back to default , so I end up having to go back and change the environment variables. Don't know if this is normal update behavior, or only happens on my system.

After changing the temporary directories (both system and user entries), you can delete the files that are in the old temporary directories as it may free up a fair bit of space. The old/default directories are usually at C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp and C:\Windows\Temp (assuming Windows is installed on C: drive).

The hoops I had to jump through which drove me mentally insane was the OS wouldn't boot on the new SSD.
I knew there must be a reason. :-D

A good video, isn't it, however we are still waiting for the lady with the big hammer :-)
