Looked in the manual and in the camera settings.. not seeing much that will do.

A quick search here didn't return anything.

ILCE-7RM5 | Help Guide | File/Folder Settings

For instance, I have 8,999 files in the 100MSDCF folder.

My Sony RX0 keeps creating folders, although I might like to limit that too. Looks like I have one folder with 6,000 files, but it is at least creating new ones.

Trying to edit 9,000 files in DxO PL6 always causes every file to be read, so it takes a long time, even with CFExpress Type A and Sony Reader on USB-C.

Tired of setting up and copying files to a subfolder.

Yes I have the Sony 1920GB card, so not a common problem.

Are you asking how to set the camera to create and use a new folder every 1000 shots?

Are you editing the files directly on the card?

You can add "create new folder" to the custom menu, and you can also set a button to do that. It's not automatic, but as long as you remember to do it every thousand-ish shots maybe that will work.

Yes,

Yes lightly - I mean nothing too serious as my photos aren't completely serious..

That's what I was thinking I'd have to do. I'll give it a try.

Dig a little deeper into that Help Guide. "Date Form" will automatically create a new folder for every date you shoot. If I start a new shoot today, my camera will create a new folder named "10041120" (100 2024 November 20).

AFAIK, all Sony cameras have this option (RX0 example).

If you have multiple projects occurring on one date, you'll have to remember to create a new folder like MediaArchivist suggests. The new folder may be named "10141120" (101 2024 November 20), then "10241120" (102 2024 November 20), then "10341120". etc.

The folder names look weird but it's easy to get used to it.

Thanks, that might make more sense for me.

I generally just dump the card to harddrive at some point, and date the whole card.

That will at least lay it out to another layer, and easier to move around.

Yes, date-form folders are very convenient. I must admit that I didn't know about them until this year.

There used to be a limit of 4000 images per folder, PLUS roll-over to a new folder when the image number hits 9999. So if you started at 1, you used to get a new folder at 4001, and again at 8001, and then at 9999.

Recent firmware for several Sony bodies has removed the 4000 images per folder limit. You can now get up to 9999 images in a folder.

So date-form folders are a big help in separating shoots on different days.

The folder names take a bit of decoding:

10041103

is the first folder on this card, created on 2024-11-03. Because they only have five characters available, they use the last digit of the year (oh, no - wraps around after 10 years - I think I'll cope!), then 2 digit month and 2 digit day in month.

BTW: if you fill one card and it overflows onto the second card in the camera, the folder number keeps going, so if you filled the first card with folders 100, 101, and 102, it will start on the second card with folder 103 - I like that - handy if you just dump the DCIM folders from both cards into the same directory.
