I was just wondering if this is normal or not.

If I have the camera powered up and LCD monitor flipped open to the side so that I am viewing the display, and I close it (so the monitor surface is protected against the camera, i.e. no longer visible) - the camera seems to enter a kind of power save mode, so even if I put my eye up to the EVF, it does not activate. I have to half press the shutter button (or any other button) to activate the camera again.

However, if I have the LCD against the body flipped open like in the traditional configuration so that the display is visible, I can switch between EVF and LCD with no problem and the switching between the two works like it should.

Is this normal? I just though it was a bit strange to disable the camera and EVF temporarily just because the LCD display is put in the closed position.

Actually I felt this was out of ordinary so I dug deeper into the menu today and I found the reason it was doing this. Under Setup > Power Setting Option there is a setting called 'Power Save by Monitor' which I assume links the power save mode to if the monitor is open or closed. I set it to 'Does Not Link' and it worked. It no longer puts the camera to sleep when I flip the monitor to closed position.

Mine does this, so I'd say it's normal. I guess it's assumed that if you're closing the screen you're putting it away for safe storage. I honestly didn't realize that you could half press the shutter to wake it back up. It doesn't wake with "any other button" though, at least not with my config. I'm very glad to have learned that this works though - I remember wishing I could operate it with the screen closed after feeling how blazing hot it gets when I'm out in the Arizona sun for hours (or even for just minutes), especially since I usually have my left eye to the viewfinder and my sweaty nose is smashed against the hot screen. Thanks for that.

It'd be nice if this function could be disabled, I guess.

OOoooo! Thanks for that!

Related - I've always had my A-6700 LCD timeout set to one minute. I now have nearly 100,000 clicks on my shutter alternating a pair of original batteries. It's been seeming like my batteries are not lasting very long - maybe 300 images. So, I changed the LCD timeout to 15 seconds. Now I'm getting about 1000 images per fully charged battery. So, leaving the LCD on appears to use a lot of battery juice.
