Just posting this for fun, mission accomplished at the end!

I just bought a "new" Sony SLT camera to add to my stable. Its a 12 year old A57, but its super advanced compared to my other Sony SLRs (A100,A200) that I've had since the early oughts. Thing is like brand new, got it for a very good price, only had 2400 shutter actuations, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah...

However, it had firmware 1.03 - there was a minor upgrade to 1.04 in 2013. So I went to update the thing, and that's when the fun started.

They had both Mac and Windows updaters available on the Sony website. I figured I'd have far less hassle with the Windows version, which was advertised as working with everything from XP forward. Downloaded it, transferred it to my late Mother In Law's Win-7 X64 box. Thing would NOT install, said it needed Windows 6.3, build 9600 (If I'm remembering correctly), that I had 6.1, build something or other. HUH? - so I had to go look that up, and it meant that I had Windows 7, but that it wanted 8.1 - despite what it said on Sony's website. Annoyance #1 - they lied about what Windows was needed, #2 - they couldn't tell me in plain English what versions they were talking about...

So! I re-read the website again, and figured I'd try it on a laptop with a 32 bit install and maybe they were just screwed up and their software wouldn't work with a 64 bit OS (They said as much for the Mac version). Nope, same result.

At this point, I figure I might as well try the Mac version. Website said it was for 10.something to 10.8. I'm running 10.12. Of course, in the worst Apple tradition, their program wouldn't work on my ancient OS even though it was newer than their requirement. {Insert Rant about Apple breaking everything here}.

Well crap, back to Windows - if this stupid software REALLY requires Win 8.1, I'm SOL. But what ended up working was an absolute janky old Toshiba laptop that I had installed Win 10 on back when it was free. I think it was a Vista box originally, but 10 runs on it surprisingly well, albeit on the slow side. So I was successful in updating the new camera - of course it only occurred to me after I hit the "no turning back now" button in the update software that I really should be running this janky old thing at least plugged into a UPS, "Power don't glitch on me now!" as there hasn't been a battery in this laptop in decades.

Athena was watching over her idiot of a servant - no power glitches and now the camera runs 1.04 firmware! Yay me...

Well perseverance paid off! I just checked my Sony A57 and luckily It already has version 1.04.

Over the years I have owned a few Sony A-mount cameras. For unknown reasons, the A57 is my favorite.

Yea, it was a bit of a thrash. I worked IT before I retired, I'm used to strange and wonderful computer problems from both Apple and Micro$oft. I didn't really need to do this update as it only added some lenses to the compensation list that I don't own. But "just in case", I wanted to update the thing.
