Hi all,

I recently updated my a1 to fw 2.02 (from 1.32 through 1.35 and 2.01 as instructed by the guide). After the update, I could no longer get the bluetooth and wifi connectivity to work in the Creators' app.

I suspect that it could be due to a failed migration from Imaging Edge as I only realized the proper steps to migrate after I unsuccessfully tried to connect to the Creator's app and in the process disconnected my camera from Imaging Edge (I can no longer connect to Imaging Edge after the update)

I never got the error reported here: After updating, the message "The Wi-Fi/Bluetooth unit has malfunctioned." appears. | Sony USA

which I beleive is related to a broken mother board?

Sony support receommended that I bring it in for service, but I wanted to try fw3.0 first to see if it solved the problem. Unfortunately, the problem is still the same (camera not detected by the Creator's app).

Has anybody had similar problems and found a way to fix it?

I am mad at myself for not carefully following the migration guide, but on the orher hand I find it to be extremely poorly developed if a camera can be broken my this....

It's a notorious problem for older Bionz XR sony cameras upto A7RV. You can only go for warranty.

It’s out of warranty, do you think my motherboard is broken?

It's the wifi chip, I think sony would repair it for you for free though.

The fact that you didn't get the error message gives me some hope.
Have you tried:

- restarting your phone?

- resetting your network parameters on the phone? (forget the wifi ssid...)

- using another phone?

- ???

There seem to be quite a few parameters that affect those connections. I would certainly try everything before sending off the camera to Sony, and moreso if it is not under warranty any more.

yup!

I have reset the network settings in the camera following advice from Sony support. I need to figure out how to do it on my (i)phone
  • using another phone?
yup!
all ideas are welcomed

I would love to not have to send it in!

Uninstall then reinstall the app on your phone

Should also add the obvious. Make sure it is the Creators App not Imaging Edge. That doesn’t work with the new SW

one more thing that you can try:

connect to a wifi hotspot/router. see if your camera can find the router and connect to it. a1 can connect to hotspots on its own. if it does work (scans without issue and connects with success) then it's probably just the issue of your phone. you should also be able to find the camera once its connected to the router via your PC/Mac's imaging edge desktop remote.

Thanks for your input! It is the Creators app which I cannot get to work

It cannot find the wifi SSIDs and it does not work typing it in manually. It appears to be searching and I do not get any error codes except that it cannot find a connectable access point. Can you elaborate on your last point?

the last point is depending on connecting to a wifi. so if it cannot connect to a wifi, it's definitely something wrong. if a full reset cannot help you, then i'm afraid that you can only seek help from sony repair center then

I guess I will have to bring it in for service. I also tried a full reset.

About a year ago the WiFi in my A1 stopped working also but Bluetooth seems to still work. Updating to newer firmware did not fix the problem.

From what I have read on the internet various people have experienced a similar problem, and some have said that they had to get the motherboard replaced to fix it.

Where I am in the Philippines I am not sure if there are any service centers here that I would trust to repair it without causing any damage, or if it can be sent directly to Sony or not for them to repair.

I recently updated from 1.32 to 3.00 and got the same message. It bothers me since I have never used Bluetooth on this camera. Anyone in the US had it fixed and what was the cost involved? I'm preparing to send it in for cleaning anyway.

if you insist, then it should be covered by sony, for free

Unfortunately, it isn't covered by warranty.

It should be as it's not caused by you, and Ive seen various cases of Sony fixed it for free out of warranty.

Thanks for that reply. I will talk to them before sending it in.

I have since this thread was started updated to 3.0 which did not resolve the issue.
This is the message I got from Sony in Dennark

“Hi there!

Thank you for contacting Sony.

Case number: 27626356

It is not covered under warranty and is not a known issue.

Wishing you a great day and week!’

After this, I tried one more time to see if it would connect to WiFi, it was searching until the screen went black and the camera completely froze. This had happened a few times before but could be solved by taking the battery out and restarting the camera. However, now that doesn’t work anymore and the camera is basically dead. When I take the battery out and restart the camera I get on flash of the red diode on the back of the camera, but it does not start.

It sucks badly

Yes indeed, it sucks... 🫤 I sympathize...

And Sony saying that they don't know about the issue! Such bad faith is really a shame...
