Having read and synthesized the various next K-1 threads, the "why not a mirrorless?" threads, the film project info and the retro camera discussions, I now think I have the answer that can satisfy everyone:

The Pentax GRX II.

It's retro, because its a blast from Pentax's (well, Ricoh's) past.

It's mirrorless.

It's satisfies the lovers of all different sensor sizes (although I doubt it could hold a MF sensor). They'd have to add a FF though.

It would have some new lenses.

It works with L mount lenses.

It even appeases the IR shooting fans.

It does snap focus like the GR.

It satisfies those yearning for smaller cameras.

Literally something for most everyone. With modern denoising, the smaller sensored, long lens module would be great. They could add a video specific sensor module too.

And no one is making anything remotely like it. Maybe it was Pentax's version of the Newton, ahead of its time. Maybe it will usher in a new dawn in photography!

For those who are unfamiliar, https://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/products/gxr/

And a (relatively) modern review: https://www.35mmc.com/21/01/2018/ricoh-gxr-review/

Nice idea :) but I’m not hankering after a new body. The K3mkiii is far more capable than I will ever be.

What I hope for is K mount lenses. Specifically the following wildlife travel lenses:

DA HD 55-550mm

DA HD 18-270mm PLM (or 18-300 PLM)

DA* 50-150 f/2.8 PLM

DA* 60-270 f/4 PLM

DFA* 50-300 f/2.8 - 4 SDM

DFA HD 45-450mm

An interesting idea. I am not holding my breath but if Ricoh wants to focus on niche products this fits the bill. One downside is the level of effort required for each lens module. I note that DPR has these listed as cameras not lenses.

They would need a GXR II body to be compaible with the old lens modules as a start, but there are lots of possibilities for new creative ideas.

It is not so much about a new body, and certainly not to *compete* with a K-3iii, but more of a different system that can be tailored to very different uses.

I hear they are quiet testing early prototypes :-)
DA HD 18-270mm PLM (or 18-300 PLM)

DA* 50-150 f/2.8 PLM
If they do it will be a PLM (or similar) update to the DA* 50-135.
DA* 60-270 f/4 PLM
Why 270 vs 250?
DFA* 50-300 f/2.8 - 4 SDM
Hmm... sounds heavy.
DFA HD 45-450mm

who told you!? :)

yeah but they don’t have to. 50-150 makes more sense :)
DA* 60-270 f/4 PLM
Why 270 vs 250?
why not. The original 18-250 became the 18-270… so there’s a precedent :)
DFA* 50-300 f/2.8 - 4 SDM

heavy never stopped Pentax before :)
