70D and lens re-calibration?

As posted in a previous thread I've had focusing issues with a new 70D. At least some of the issues are related to a problem with my 100-400 L as I can produce similar results with the lens and my 50D. I'm not convinced at this point all of the issues are limited to the lens.

I've thought about sending the camera and kit lens in to Canon for a check over and calibration but when I called and asked for an estimate of the cost they refused to give me even a wide ball park. I know there are a number of people who are very happy with this camera but I've also seen a few posts from those with unresolved problems including at least one who has sent his camera and lens off to Canon several times without seeing the issues resolved.

My questions are, if you have had this done:

• What was your cost?
• Did the process resolve your issues?

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but Canon should calabrate your 70D and any lens you send along with it for free. I am assuming your 70D is still in warranty.

That has been my experience too.

I haven't had to pay for Canon to calibrate a couple of lenses and camera I sent off whilst still under warranty.

As long as the 70D is under warranty I would send it of together with any lenses regardless of their age on the basis that it is the 70D that requires adjustment.

Do you mean the camera/lens combination requires more adjustment than the camera's MFA feature allows? I just finished MFA for a 70-200L4 on a 70D and although it required a large adjustment is was possible to calibrate it myself. I was just wondering if there is more to your issue than that?

No, the problem with my 100-400L is erratic focusing. Occasionally dead on, sometimes front focused, sometimes back focused, sometimes so out of focus you can't tell. For whatever reason it's more noticeable with the 70D than with my 50D but I do see some of the same problem there.

If I ever get my new Tamron and get it working as expected then I can see about sending the 100-400 in for servicing.

For the replies. I did some more testing this evening with my 100 macro, no MFA, and the results are acceptable. I'll probably keep the camera and decide sometime soon if I want to send it it for calibration or not.
