Should I wait for the Mk III, any speculations / rumors / assessments about features, time to market and price?
Or buy the MK II
How come the price for the Mk II is not dropping substantially?

cause is the most requested camera in canon line up
and no the mark 3 wont be out for at least 1 more year (of not more)

so go ahead and buy it
once you have it
you will regret not to have bought it earlier

Because the MK III is pretty far off too.

If you need a great camera now buy the 5d II. If not wait as long as you want with your current body and buy lenses

Should I wait for the Mk III,
What makes you think there will ever be a Mk III?

The Mk II is the only camera Canon have ever added functionality to - first manual video exposure control and soon to come, but announced, 24 & 25fps video modes.

Even looking at the situation with rose tinted spectacles, it could be another 3 years till they bring out a Mk III, since the MkII was 3 years from the original 5D and they never added any features to that.

But there might never be a Mk III - after the extremely unusually pre-announced feature upgrades due for release early 2010. So the question is pointless - you could wait forever to see a 5D upgrade. A 1Ds "downgrade" to the 5D format - do you really need the portrait handgrip on a studio oriented camera? - might appear sooner and be better value.

It's been around 1 year, last month Canon was still backordered 40,000 units worlwide! They will milk it for at least 2 more years! If they update the focusing on all the other models then it will start to look in need of an update. Enjoy it now if you can or buy a 7D.

Appreciative student of the late Joan Wakelin. 35 years later still enjoying it!

Isn't the 5D II basically a "downgraded" 1DS III? Mightn't the 5D III follow the 1DS IV in a similar fashion?

Frankly, I'm waiting for the 5D MKV (but I'm using a 5D MKII in the meantime).

No, it's not. It's basically 1Ds3 sensor put into the original 5D body, plus video.

You mean, like put the great sensor to the inferior-AF-crippled* body again? I wouldn't be surprised.

* 10 years after EOS-3, 5D2 AF was nothing but intentional cripple to protect the 1D line. Canon just tried to pretend that there was no advance in the AF technology for the prosumers class. Period.

Seems you really have some angst over the 5DMKII - yet the two 5D's have been such huge hits with Canon and their customers.

How do you work that out?

I will probably buy the 5D Mark III but 5D Mark IV will really be the dream camera to use and enjoy.

The reason being Mark III will have the good sensor and good AF but both will be perfected in Mark IV with good new features which will be crippled in the Mark III to not rob sales of IDs Mark IV and 3D...:-)

a few months back i was contemplating the rumors of a nikon d700s/x and was torn between waiting or buying the 5dmkii....... im glad i went for it and bought the 5d mark ii. not only have i had the chance to take amazing photos since then, but i've come to realize that it is a fantastic camera. say what you will about the dated AF system, but for me, it works fine. i use the center point like many people most of the time, but on my t1i i would use the center point also! ive used the alservo af without issue and even got in a couple of great shots when some ducks were flying over a lake. i will never go back to crop... and im glad i bought everything i did before the canon price increases. in terms of why the price isnt going down, i believe it had to do with overwhelming market demand and the yen. canon put out a winner and i doubt we will see a successor next year... id say probably 2011

i dont know what you have now, but if it isnt full frame, you dont know what you are missing

Not in my book Victor. I would love the 1Ds features in a conventional sized body. In fact, I think Canon & Nikon's bodies have always been oversized, and over heavy, for the features they deliver.

Hardly. Firmware updates to 1D3 and 1Ds3 did add functionality (such as joystick AF point selection.)
That isn't added functionality, just another means of implementing existing functionality!

The upgrades to the 5DII firmware added functions that previously did not exist at all, such as manual exposure control of video and, announced but yet to be released, new video frame rates. That is significantly difference from mapping the same function available on Button A to Dial B or Joystic C.

Sadly, the function mapping that loads of people have been asking for, MLU on a button instead of a menu item, remains elusive to the 5D series.

What a tangled web you weave.

I used to be indecisive once but now I'm not so sure.
