Finally got around to trying some flash shots with the 5D.

With my 1D MK II I can leave it in AWB and get decent WB results 95% of the time with or without flash.

The 5D is a but more picky. I tried AWB and the shots looked way too cool. Tried "Sun" preset ( a carry over from my old 10D days ) and still no go. Switched it to the flash preset and WOW, it was spot on. I never have had these results with the flash preset.

Of course, no camera of mine will become one of the family until it photographs my golden cat.

These done after bribing the sleepy cat with an ornament he's been lusting over.... Used the 85L and bounced the flash high on a wall and ceiling

1/200s f/5.6 at 85.0mm iso200 with Flash

A couple of crops

1/200s f/5.6 at 85.0mm iso200 with Flash

1/200s f/5.6 at 85.0mm iso200

I set the camera to "faithful" instead of the default "standard" I had been shooting with. Very nice.

How do you like the 5D so far Melanie?

I'm about 99% sure I'll be going with a 1D Mk II N and as much as I'd like the 12.8MP res of the 5D I'm just not impressed with the images from it at 100% they just don’t seem to be tack sharp (web sized ones are fantastic) and I don’t feel like using prime lenses to get sharp photos. Any input would be greatly appreciated :)

nice clear lighting!

Ive received a message from the ambassador to the UN of the CATS around the world and he (the cat) wanted to thank Canon and all the Canon users for all the nice images of cats they keep providing to the humanity (in the meaning of humans)

it was a nice message (no mention of Nikon anywhere.. they don't do cats and they didn't get the thank you note from the cat ambassador)

:)

Thanks! I just noticed that the whiskers are showing signs of sharpening problems. I think I need to re-do my "prepare for web" action and tweak the sharpening amount.

They shoot Great Blue Herons over there....

An eggshell... not white.
Interesting. That may be why the shots are very warm with WB in flash and why auto made things too cool for your taste.

Better each time that I use it. I always wonder what I have done when I buy a new camera.
The controls are intuitive, which is nice.

Here are a couple crops that have not been down-sized or sharpened for you to consider

And here's a link to a full size ( LARGE ) landscape taken with a 24-70 L, no sharpening and this was on a monopod, not a tripod.

Even with a compromised zoom (28-300L IS) and JPEG straight out the camera , the pics from the 5d are tack sharp , I have seen no complaints about this at all. I print real big (up to 2m ) and in print they are sharp too.
Using something like my 100 macro easily demonstrates just how good the 5d is.
Have a look at some of these full size

Ok, these are THE best pics I've seen here on dpreview. I have never seen such sharp, clear shots. The colors are incredible and exposures perfect. You must do a book with your talent!

Thank you very very Much Melanie for taking time to post some 100% crops. I've still got some deciding to do apparently, hope I can walk into a wolf/ritz/mikes camera in the city and actually hold the cameras and use them before I decide.

Well I wouldn't say that the 5D doesn't produce tack sharp images...it definitely does if given the right environment. As a a studio photographer I can guarentee you that the 5D and the 1DMII both produce tack sharp images sitting on a tripod and using an L lens. However the real difference is when you are doing something like shooting sports and wildlife, the 1DMII with the better AF will yield the tack sharp photos more often in that case. But if you shooting portraits and landscapes, the 5D is the better camera for that.

Nice Shots, Nice Cat.

I have the same setup and I too feel that AWB is a bit too cool. I called Canon concerning this and they requested to do a custom white balance. I was hoping it was a setting on the camera. The 580 works better with the white balance on the 20D.

I shoot a lot of weddings and I use awb a lot because it gives me the white natural color on a wedding dress. Especially in mix lighting, AWB gives me the whites dress. Doing a custom white balance takes time and in a pinch you could mess up. I also try to use as little flash as possible.

I don’t mind taking a bit warmer images when shooting portrait or glamour. I had the 10D and the 20D and feel that AWB was much better on that camera than on the 5D. But I would not trade the 5D for both 10D and 20D put together.

Happy shooting

Jay

Hmm, my 5D shots are as sharp as anything I've seen out of a DSLR, 1D II included (if anything, they seem a tad sharper).

The 1D II is a fantastic camera though, with the same sensor pitch as the 5D, but with the impenetrable armor plated hull of a 1-series camera drool . I'm sure you'll love it! Rip out a 8.5fps salute for me when you get it ;-)
