Hello All

So, doing my tests today for my video review on the EOS 550D.

At random moments, sometimes 10, 20 or even 30 seconds into recording video, the recording stops and a message appears "Video Recording has been stopped automatically".

After this, the following recording of 2,3,4+ minutes is fine. Then it randomly happens again.

When shooting video, the meter for data transfer either doesn't appear, or only shows one bar max, so it isn't a data transfer problem. FYI I am using a Class 6 Samsung SDHC Memory Card Plus, so nice and fast.

Try different card, same happened to me, had FUJI class 6 card, it was shutting down randomly, got LG 4G class 6, now no problem

Have you done an in-camera format of the card? (you should)

What is that supposed to achieve?

same thing happens to me on my 500d but it doesnt show any message, it just stops. and i have a 16gb class6 card. not sure if i should buy another memory and have the same problem.

Now tried with three different memory cards, all fail at certain time limits after recording. The best result is just after two minutes.

Anyone?

I have the same problem "Video Recording has been stopped automatically" on my T2i . It happens when using both of the Class 6, 8GB SDHC memory cards that I've tried. One is a PQI, one is a Transend. Both have been formatted in the camera.

The problem shows up quickly in both 1080/30 and 720/60 modes. Sometimes the gauge fills quickly and it quits, other times it just quits. I've never successfully recorded more that 10 seconds.

I was assuming that the cards weren't quick enough, but then I saw someone mention HD Tune for testing transfer speeds. I downloaded the free version, and they both transfer at greater than 12MB/sec using my laptop card reader. That should easily be fast enough. Both cards recorded video OK with the T1i.

Anyone with any suggestions?

Thanks

really? I've tried it a lot of times with the Transcend 8gb class 6 and it works fine.. I've even left recording just to test if i'd get the same errors as you guys were experiencing..

all tests came out good, according to specifications w/ just - + 20 seconds difference.. oh and I have a T1i. I know it doesn't help at all but just letting you know my transcend class 6 can keep up with the video writing speed.. I haven't done anything prior, just formatted the card in the camera following some advices here..

I just successfully recorded 12 minutes of 1080/30 on the same Transcend card. The only thing that I did between failure and success was to low level format the card again. The gauge never even turns on now.

This thread did start with mention of an intermittent issue.

This is black and purple LG card, I got them in Korea, don't know anywhere else. Marked as class 6

All problems are card related. Not all are created equal, some with class 6 are too slow for video output from 550D. Only way I can suggest is to go to store and try one brand after other, until you find one which works (I can only assume one company will have constant card speed in all of them). For me, I went to 5 SD card so far, all rated class 6, lastly with Fuji, finally LG class 6 (black and purple) did the trick, can do 1080 for 9 min (run out of room) with not even one bar showing up. YMMV, I guess is trial and error job. Let us know, what worked for you

I don't have a 550D (I have a 500D) but wondered if Sandisk's Class 10 Extreme III (30 MB/sec) would be a potential solution? Class 10 seems to equate to a nice, fast Class 6 (I notice that the Classes are defined by pretty low minimum performance levels, so something just scraping into Class 6 can be a bit on the slow side). The larger capacities of the Extreme III are a bit dear but they do seem to be gradually lowering in price...

Did you ever take a snap shot while recording. Others have reported that the card either paused after taking a snap shot or it stopped video recording completely.

Yes, I never tried that, but you are right. After taking shot, buffer overflows and it stopped recording! I guess I am going to search for other one or won't take pictures while recording. Thanks for pointing it out.

Did you try to take picture while recording? My LG works fine as long as I stick with recording, after taking snapshot, card is chocking and shuts down. How about yours?
Thanks

I can record fine on one of my Class 6 cards for a full 4GB file, but if I try to click off a RAW still it will stop recording within seconds. If I lower the still size to large, it has no problem and continues to record.
