i just bought the 40D last night.
I took 5 images for testing purposes.....and have had no luck in viewing.

I have Adobe CS3 updated.
iphoto gave error during import.

used Canon EOS utility to download the image to local drive, then tried to open in CS3 and it also gave me the error.

both programs are saying the file is an unknown format.
I was able to do this with 20D....so is the 40D using newer RAW file type?

has anyone been able to do this?

Adobe has to release an update to Adobe Camera Raw in order to support RAW files from new cameras. Until then, you're stuck with Canon's DPP software.

Every new camera brings a new RAW format - at a minimum the tag that ID's the camera.

It will take Adobe a few weeks to update their converter for the new files, if history is accurate.

Everytime a new camera comes out people of astonished that Adobe doesn't support it yet as if Adobe and Canon get along enough to cooperate on anything.

Try the DPP that came with your camera. Then post it so that we can try it too!

Need to do a little research before buying the latest, greatest. RAW support needs to be updated in every converter for each model before it can be used.

this is what happens when there's no standard. Imagine if instead of jpg every camera used it's own compression scheme....why don't canon and nikon adopt adobe's standard going forward??

man....these forums are filled with asses....huh?

thank you to the people who contributed to the thread in a positive way.

while i do know adobe needs to update the conversion for new RAW formats, i did not realize all because the camera changes that it makes the RAW file unreadable.

I thought it would only not work if the RAW file was a newer / better version of RAW....but oh well.

the program that comes with Canon CD sucks. I hate using those apps. they are huge (over 200MB) for something that does little to nothing. I guess ill just wait for adobe to update before I start reviewing my images.

Out of curiosity, which post are you referring to?

Having looked through the thread I find one post that is not helpful and correct. Isn't it rather rude calling all those helpful people "asses"?

As others have pointed out, a raw file is not a standardized format but the raw data from the sensor. When the sensor changes, so does the raw data and the raw file. Adobe, Bibble and others will catch-up in a few weeks. If I were you I would spend that time exploring how good the 40D is shooting JPG. Might be good to know should you end up in a situation with a memory card shortage and great many things to shoot.

i am in no way calling the helpful people here asses... (and i meant asses in the nicest possible way for the others [only 1 or 2 in this thread, many elsewhere in the forums])

anyways...yeah, i understand now about the RAW situation.

I never shoot jpeg. i use my ipods to download data if im on the road and run out of cards. i have a ton of cards too....so i should be all set. If i do run out in 1 day...i probably need a rest anyways.

also...on a side note....what does (nt) mean? i see it all over these forums...but dont realy get it.

Everyone is over reacting to such thing, canceling your preorder??? thats a little bit childish but all the better for those who want to camera for the camera that you canceled will be someone elses treasure. the camera just came out for crying out loud. In a month or so Adobe should be releasing an update soon as well as the other raw processing software

You may open the raw file in DPP and then transfer to photoshop. The 16 bit tiff in photochop is closer to the original raw.

I agree. I really don't like DPP, although I know other people do.
Can't wait for the other RAW convertors to update.
