I have the Moongoose 262 gimbel head wgich I use with my telephotos that have tripod rings. I do not want to buy a ball head and was wondering if I could use the Mark II with the Moongoose.

I know there are L brackets by Kirk and others, but is this what I would need? If so, can someone give me details as to what parts to buy?

Moongoose can be seen at:

Do you mean can you attach the camera body directly to the mongoose? To which the answer is surely no since this is a gimbal mount which needs to be attached near to the point of balance.

Which is the other problem with mongoose/sidekick style devices and a heavy camera like the Mk2. You need to have a lens that is heavy enough to balance off the camera. With a 300 f/4 it is marginal - the camera is pushed right forward and you have little up/down movement. Longer lenses are fine.

The p-20 plate is for attaching a 100-400 lens (which can be attached to any Canon that accepts it) to the Mongoose. I would need more than a plate.

I have seen Kirk L brackets in photos but never have seen anyone using one. I was wondering if that could be attached to the Mongoose with my Mark II, no matter how small the lens.

Glad to here that. Do you have to buy anything besides the RRS L bracket? If so, what?

I have the same question - using the mongoose 262 head with lens that does not have a tripod collar. An L bracket for the camera body would be a solution, but as I I look on the RRS website, I can't seem to picture how that would work on the Mongoose? Is there something else needed to make this work?

I got my RRS L bracket today - 2 days after I ordered it. It is light and screws to the tripod mount of the cmaera. There are plates on both the horizontal and vertical where it slides right into the Mongoose.

I suppose a ball head would be a bit better, but I want to keep things simple and leave the Mongoose on my tripod.

Allan,

Thanks - I think I will orderthe L bracket, although it seems a bit expensive for what you are actually getting! Still, I too want to keep the Mongoose on my tripod for convenience.
