My 2 pcs of 511 batteries refuse to be charged
it seems to just gave up less than 12months of use

is there any way to save them
I have been using only CANON original charger

Does (a) the charger indicate that the battery is full or (b) is it actually charging and the battery doesn't charge?

I had problem (a) occur every now and then after a few hundred charges.

Try removing the battery and reinserting it. Does the light start flashing slow, then fast then just light up steady in a few seconds? if yes, then try again, and again. At one point, it might just keep flashing slowly and proceed with the charging.
Good luck!
(been charging my 511 that way for half a year now, just a minor annoyance)

Normally, Li-ion rechargables should last about 3 years or 300-500 cycles.

Storage at high temperature is one way to kill them, discharge below the "low-voltage lockout" is another (normally the camera would not do that).

One Li-ion battery I received had a bad solder join internally, which I found upon cracking open the case and was able to fix. This was a cheap off-brand, hopefully Canon's are better.

i take it you have other batteries that do charge in the charger .. to rule out the charger being broken

have you cleaned the contacts on the battery ... and the pins on the charger for good measure ..??

Tommy,

if these are NOT original Canon 511's, and if you've just made the switch to the 20D, the problem lies with the new adapter and not with the batteries. Canon seems to've made some change/s with the new 20D adapter, and some 511-equivalents just refuse to charge. No problem with the genuine stuff though.

In my case, one of my "OEM" batteries simply refuses to charge while another two work perfectly well.

Cheers,

Interesting to note that the 20D charger has this problem
No i didnt make the upgrade to 20D, the price vs feature
did not justify it

I am making full use of the 10D and do not see how upgrading
would help me, although if i am buying now, will definitely get the
20D

Yeah other batteries are charging well, just this pair
Maybe I left them charging for too long, but I thought
these CANON chargers are intelligent and would not overcharge???

I upgraded from the 300D - the most worthwhile upgrade ever. :-)

Haven't encountered this problem myself...
