Steve's Digicam reviews: FZ20, FZ3

I am thinking about getting either the fz15 or fz3. In steves reviews the fz3 shot time including focus is 3/10 of a second with a transend 60x card. Where the shot time for the fz20 (figure probably similar to fz15) is twice as long at 6/10 of a second. This wouldn't be because of the card would it. I like to take pictures of my dog, and she is really fast also my kids (not so fast). The 3/10 of a second sounds really fast. And I really only print up to 8 x 10.

in the real world, it wont matter; you'll find either will photograph your dog and kids..

Hi Al,

Thanks for letting the group know the review was posted. Unless Steve got a special model, there's an "oops" in his Conclusion page: "When shooting outdoors, the LCD has very few angles that reflect the sun, and the eyepiece of the EVF if deep enough to keep out ambient light. Indoors in low-ambient lighting, they "gain up" to help aid in framing, which is crucial in these conditions."
Anybody else have a FZ20 who's EVF gains up in low light situations?
Also on his Samples page he has them all shot at "50 ISO."

All things considered, it's great that he fully appreciates what a terrific camera it is.
Best regards,
Barry

And the shot time for 3megapixel shots on FZ20 will likely be equal to that of FZ3, it's the shot to shot time @ 5 megapixel shots that's slower than FZ3's. So if you want faster shot to shot time on FZ20, just turn down the resolution on FZ20, and you can always turn the resolution back up and make use of 5 megapixel resolution.

I find the ISO comparison samples very useful, by those samples ISO 200 looks very useable only 400 shows real noise, I wonder what noise reduction settings were used for this pics.
Does the FZ20 users had similar results regarding ISO?

Is it me or do the pictures for both cameras at full wide-angle seem a bit softer than others?

Digs and kids will cause you problems.

Fast AF is part of the solution but Continious mode will help more.

When you compare the samples galleries from the FZ20 and the Z3, there is not much of a difference... except for purple fringing, noise and softness of focus.

It is nothing like the dcresource pictures anyhow..
Maybe Jeff had a bad day?

Interesting.

Both cameras will get you the shot. Both are fine cameras. But note that the FZ3 and FZ15 give 4 frames per second vs. 3 for the FZ20.

You WILL notice the difference. You'll get much better action sequences with the FZ3 or the FZ10 or the FZ15 (all 4 fps) than with the 3 fps FZ20. Whether photographing your dog or your kids, you WILL notice the difference.
The difference is significant.
