I want to transfer the prinout from my Epson 1270 to metal disks and ceramics (plates). I know there are iron-on transfers, but they are described as being for fabric. Anyone know of any other photo transfer method that might work with metal?

Thanks.

I dont know about metal. But you can transfer on to coffee mugs. That is ceramic. So try it out on the metal.

These guys http://www.conde.com/ offer a lot of different products - one of them might be what you're looking for.

Try experimenting a little. I would think you could do the iron-on transfer on just about any material. The next trick would be to make the transfer stay in place. There are lacquers made for just about any material. Find some good clear lacquers that work well with the type metal and/or ceramic you are using and spray it over the transfered image. If possible, select a lacquer that includes some UV protection. You may also want to experimant a little with color overcoats (spray lacquer or paint) as well for various effects. This technique (spray on lacquer) is also used on photographs to help preserve them.

That was a nice link.

They do, in fact, have systems for dealing with at least SOME metals.

Thanks very much for all of the input and help.

I spoke with Conde at length this morning; they were very helpful, knowledgable and informative. Their metal transfer material works with dyesub but not inkjet. They are sending some fabric transfer material for inkjet to cotton that may work with fiddling, spray coatings, etc.

I am particularly interested in acid-resist applications. I want to take a design from the digital camera, transfer it to metal, acid etch the part of the metal without any image, then burnish off the transfer material. I will let you know how this works out after my experiments. (About three weeks.)

Thanks again.

I use inkjet on metal but the inks are special inks and the metal has a polymer coating to accept image. I print on ceramics, polyesters and metal

Brian-

I would be very interested to see some posted photos of examples on metal. and to know more details on the special inks and the polymer coated metal/ceramics. I would be happy to buy an extra printer and convert it to dedicated inks if necessary.

Thanks.

If the end result does not require color - i.e., greyscale - one way is to rasterize the image and use a laser engraver. It transfers very well to most metals and to a variety of ceramics, lithics, etc. - it takes about a 100 watt laser engraver. It's not something you would do yourself unless you invested a good deal in the equipment - but the results can be incredibly good.

Sorry I havent gotten back with you........you would need Epson 850, 900,980 or 3000 printer.....inks you could get from Conde and a heat press

thats it!

Hi. fell across your post whilst looking for something else. You may or may not be aware that photographic dry film etch resist for etching copper in making electronic circuit boards is available and It should work perfectly for your application. If you haven't come across it before it is sensitive to UV light. Search for "dry film photoresist" made by DuPont. There are many Youtube videos on making PCBs
