I know similar questions has been asked before, but I would like to know what the difference between an ixus V, V2 or V3 is compared to the G6 as far as Shutter lag and delay when taking pictures are.. I am very tempted to buy the G6, but shutter lag is an important thing when I choose my next camera. The Ixus can take anything up to a second and a half when taking pictures, and this is a bit slow when shooting kids and more action pictures.

Anyone made the move from Ixus V1/2/3 or G6 and can tell me if they can see the difference?

I cant speak to the IXUS vs G6 question but if shutter lag is THAT important to you and you dont want to go DSLR then you might check the reviews at imaging-resource.com which post shutter lag timing tests for each camera they test. Very helpful.!

Steve's Digicams rates it at about .4 seconds. I played around with one extensively at Best Buy because I am thinking about buying one too. It felt much faster than my Minolta F100 which takes about a second (and seemed to get a better lock, too). However, there still is a noticeable lag, meaning that you will still want to employ the half-press most of the time. It had a good continuous cycle mode, which was even pretty decent with the flash.

When we discuss "fast" and "shutter lag" we need to be very careful that we distinguish between "full autofocus shutter lag" and "prefocus shutter lag". You can work around the full autofocus shutter lag by prefocusing (half shutter depressed) or manual focus or hyperfocal distance prefocus. But prefocus shutter lag cannot be overcome because it is the time the camera takes to set everything up for the picture AFTER you fully depress the shutter. If you are trying to capture the precise moment this is the lag that's important. Good DSLR are less than 50 milliseconds. Bad digicams are about 150 milliseconds. Some recent digicams (notably Sonys) are faster than DSLRs for prefocus shutter lags. See the Imaging-Resources site reviews for precise measured values. Most other reviews give only estimates.

You could also try landscape or infinity focus mode (the mountain, not the flower symbol). It locks the camera focus at hyperfocal distance, and everything from half the hyperfocal distance to infinity will be in pretty good focus.

Check out this thread, I just posted regarding the new Ixus cameras-

If you want closeups it won't work, but it's worth a shot IMO-
