Dilemma: Dead Dimage7hi

At 18 months, my Dimage up and died. Minolta first quoted me the repair cost of $400CAD. While that's pretty hefty for a camera for which I paid nearly $2000CAD, I told them to go ahead. A few weeks later they gave me a revised estimate of nearly $1000CAD! They knew full well that this was unreasonable and so offered me an A2 at a discounted price (but still more than $1000CAD). What to do, what to do?

I'd planned to move up to a DSLR next year and keep the Dimage as my spare. So much for that idea. Moving to the A2 would seem like throwing good money after bad. Now I'm without a digicam. Any suggestions (philosophical or not)?

If you're going to get a DSLR soon, the A2 would be overkill, I'd reccomend you get a camera that you can live with until you get the DSLR, and then will become a good camera to compliment the DSLR. Something portable and powerful like a Canon S60 or something,, just my 2 cents/

If your 7hi died as a result of accidental damage you may be able to claim under any home insurance which you may have.

Get something very different like a Z3 or Panasonic superzoom. That way you'll still have plenty of reasons to get the DSLR of your choice. Of course, as suggested earlier, if your insurance covers it the the A2 at a discount would be OK though it may annoyingly conflict with a DSLR in terms of convenience, leaving you uncertain what to use.

Forget how you got here - that's history. You have been offered an A2 for $1000CAD. I assume that is a very attractive figure for an A2 and if that camera suits - buy it. However, if you want a pocket sized camera or don't want to stay with the Minolta stable then go for something else.

If you can wait another month you might convince KM to providel you with a D7D for a nice price....

You can buy an A2 from Tigerdirect.ca for CAD999.97 plus appx. CAD26 S&H. So Minolta's discount is nothing to write home about! Perhaps they might consider a decent discount on the up-coming DSLR or even a nice little "pocket camera" such as the G-400 or later. You might be able to sell your current camera for parts.

Stay away from Tigerdirect! Terrible! See resellerrattings: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller5616.html

I'm still dealing with my credit card company from a bad transaction 2 years ago, and I'm not alone!

It was weird how it died. I just finished taking a quick wide-angle macro shot of a flower. I hit the macro switch, zoomed out and hit the macro switch again. The display was completely futzed.

If I'd have dropped it, let it get wet or hang out in the sun, I'd have understood. Heck, if I'd just picked it up one day and it didn't turn on, I'd understand, but to quick right in the middle of a shoot? Weird.

SNIP

The three or four transactions that I have had with Tigerdirect.ca have been entirely satisfactory. Of course, I can only speak for my own experiences and I shall continue to deal with them.

By the way, I am surprised that your credit card company has not been able to resolve a "bad transaction" for two years.

And if it wasnt accidenal damage and you do have insurance. Well why not just drop it? : )

If you are in Toronto, visit Henry's Outlet Store (Queen St East, downtown).

They have used digicams for decent prices, and last time I was there, they had a few 7Hx models, among many other brands and models.

I am not a fan of Henrys due to their high pricing, but this outlet store is actually reasonable...
