Although it may be a bit bulky, the DSC-770 is pretty close to shooting with a traditional 35mm. It has some great features. The price is reasonable at around $800. One of my reservations is the 1.5 megapixel sensor. How does this compare to the higher meg sensors such as the Sony S75 or S85? Also, can anyone comment on their experience with its center weighted average auto exposure and the auto focus system. Good or fair?--Gary

Sorry, Gary. It's not that you're being ignored at all. It's just that not many folks have the D770 any longer, with all of Sony's newer offerings. We used to have a larger representation of 700 and 770 users.

Patience, and perhaps you'll see some of them chime in, if they are still lurking. Until then, I would recommend that you look for the reviews at the site here and at Imaging Resource, as well as Steve's Digicams. You'll find either the 700 or the 770 reviewed there, with samples for you to look at.

Thanks Ulysses. Not many users, I better read the reviews again.

Sorry Gary, I missed your post.
I have a D770.
It is the best camera going, granting that it's pixel count is 1.5 .
But it is the greatest arguement that pixels aren't everything.

It makes outstanding 5x7 prints and very good 8x10 prints even thio arithmetic will tell you it shouldn't be able to do 8x10,
How do it do what it do?
Great dynamic range, good tonal balance, NO CA, NO noise.
This camera is a Pro camera. It retailed at one time for $1900.
It may be 1.5MP, but they are the best 1.5Mpixels you will ever find.
The CCD is a select CCD.
The exposure and AF are outstanding. The 5X lens shows NO CA.

ALL functions can be used manually. "profiles" can be set up with favorite WB etc and they are retained even if the power is removed.
It is built VERY solid. And of course it looks good.
I'll Email you some more info.

I picked up this camera used for about $400 four months ago. I like it very much and use it for my most important work. An Olympus 2000 is my back-up. I think the DSC-770 started the trend toward fixed lens digital SLRs which the Olympus E-10 and Minolta Dimage 7 perfected. This body style is perfect for me and the camera itself is reliable and performs well. You will read reviews that criticise its focusing ability. It could be sharper but it is not a fatal flaw. The !.5mp sensor is low by today's standards but ultrra high resolution is not my goal. Like any camera, once you learn to work with it you can get outstanding results. However, if you've got the dough, the E-10 is the way to go.

Gary, In have a D770, and s75

The focus system on the D770 is a bit slow and some times misses.

The photos are a bit short of saturation although that can be fixed on your PC. It has some nice features: when in auto mode, you can roll through the acceptable apertures and shutter speeds. The S75 can't do this. Also the histogram feature is usefull.

As to 1.5 mp. If you want only small pics, say A5 size it is fine. You obviously can't do so much cropping etc with the smaller image.

There is a review of the D700-Very similar to the 770 on this site.
