... but haven’t started posting yet? Well, we’re glad to know you’re out there! Welcome to the NTF! But you know, it’s hardly fair for you to sit in front of your computer screen and let us do all the work of posting. You see, this forum has been a little slow of late, and we’ve all spent a good deal of time trying to figure out why that is. This has been a pretty close-knit group of Coolpix owners over the past couple years, but a number of members have recently taken the plunge and bought fancy new DSLR rigs, and we may be feeling the effects of attrition.

But many of us are quite happy with our Coolpixes for now, and want to keep on sharing what we know and learning from other Coolpix owners. You see, it’s not just those who are experienced that have a lot to share, and it’s not just those who are new to their cameras that have a lot to learn. It’s those of you who are new to the hobby and who have basic questions that help us all take another look at what we’re doing with our cameras and help experienced users explain photography technique in easy-to-understand terms.

We all agree that it’s important for us to be encouraging and responsive to newcomers at the NTF, and we’re committed to making you feel welcome at this forum. There’s no time like the present to start posting, so take the opportunity to introduce yourself in this thread. Tell us a bit about yourself and your interest in photography. Ask that burning question. Or better yet, post your very first pic here. We promise to be gentle and supportive.

I am pretty new to the forum but try to post as much as I can - or when I have something to offer. This thread is a great chance for a poster to get comfortable with sharing! Trust me, once you make that first post - it gets easier :)

I have had my 5700 for two years and I love it. I was afraid of it for the first 6 months! Then I found this forum and found new ways to learn and gather info and the fear went away. I don't have any new shots to share right now (I am at work) - maybe later.

Dawn, thanks for trying to pick things up around here!
AND
New posters, welcome!

I have to say I am both. I have been lurking since June, and have only posted a few times.

I received a CP 2100 in Oct of 2003. Boy, I loved that little camera. Shots were always sharp, color great, and the preset modes worked well. Unfortunately, it was broken this spring and I decided to replace it with a 5400 in June. I have only taken "family" pictures over the years but decided that since the kids are older, and I have more time, to try to make photography a hobby.

I purchased the 5400 because I could take quick pics with it, but still have the manual settings to play and learn. But, I have had it two months now and still haven't found the time to really dig into it.

I have posted some pictures, they are not necessarily good ones, just some that were on my computer when I was setting up my pbase account.

http://www.pbase.com/eab1005

I will try to post more questions and comment.

Hi Dawn

Thanks for the invitation and all of the helpful references. I'll admit to being a newbie but I'm a little hesitant to admit to being a "lurker" - sounds like something you can get arrested for. I bought a 5700 last April and have recently discovered the NTF and the reams of helpful info. I've been most impressed with the collegial atmosphere of the forum of which you are a prime example. I've been slowly working up to posting but have yet to post a picture - still working up to that but I promise it will happen soon. I am slowly making the transition from taking snapshots to hopefully become a real photographer. Thanks for your encouragement of us newbies. Hopefully we can do our bit to keep the forum going strong.

Regards,
Pete F.

BTW - I like to flyfish so I am pretty envious that you can take an evening stroll to the local fishing hole.

... nice to meet you! I just checked out your gallery. "Catching Crawfish" is a great image. You should post it here when you get a chance. Look forward to your future posts!

I see this is your 7th post! Good for you for getting started. We'll put you in the newbie rather than the lurker category, okay? ;-) Don't worry about posting snapshots, that's how you transition from snapshooting to photography. We like to see 'em all. And I've noticed that you'll get great feedback if you ask a specific question about an image that you want to work on, too.

I've never done any fly-fishing, but those who do it have such a graceful appearance when they're out there swinging that pole and line around. I am fortunate to live in a city with a river running through it.

Hey Dawn and everyone else,

I also am a little of both. Started checking this site out when my famliy decide to get me a DC as a gift. I choose the 5200 and have been happy with it. I tried posting some pics in the anti 5200 campaign but they didn't look so hot after posting so I just went back to lurking.

Anyway I will try to contribute more( tough w/ a 2 year old and one due in end of Sept) as I really enjoy looking at all the great shots and have learned a ton already.

Big thanks to all here, it is really a good group. It's rare to find a forum with virtually no flaming and full of informative and helpful people.

I can feel the NTF starting to regenerate itself to its former glory thanks to your interest and enthusiasm.

WELL DONE DAWN.

You failed to let us know if you are still having trouble posting photos here??
If you are, read the Imbedding post from Dawn and this should clear it up.

Some sites where we store our photos do not allow imbedding. A few that do are Pbase and Photobucket.
Help is available if you ask I am sure.

Another thing that will help is if you would TRIM off the unneeded parts of the messages before you post.
Look forward to seeing your photos
rodo

I was able to get one posted using photobucket but the quality was really poor. I am reading through the instructions that Dawn posted and will try again soon.
Thanks for the tips.

Hi Dawn or shall we now call you Auntie Dawn now that Uncle Frank has moved to higher things and you are starting to take over his role?.
I'm what you would call a lurker and an infrequent poster.

I've learnt a lot from the people in this forum and as long as there are people like you contributing this forum will never die.

Just plain "Dawn" will do fine, thanks. I doubt UF, or any other member for that matter, can be replaced. But I think that if all of us pull together and share our expertise and our time, this forum will continue to be a lively place to learn.

I am a bit of both too. I always make sure I find time to visit every day to check things out but I like to take my time when posting and the days seemed crammed full of kid things and dog training for Search and Rescue and work, both home and factory. (ugh) I will try to post more but of course that means taking better pictures than I have been lately! I uploaded 115 last night and didn't like any of them! I'm getting bored with taking flower shots lately. Time to move on to something else.

I'll try to take the 8700 to training tonight but it's a bit gloomy out and threatening rain. I'm marching in a small town parade tomorrow night with Miska, my SAR dog in training, maybe I can get some decent shots then??
A HUGE thanks to all on this site for all of your help!

Dawn, I consider you the site cheerleader. You have a wonderful way of engouraging and giving helpful criticism at the same time. It's a wonderful gift!
