Here is my "problem": I got $700 (R4500 South African Rands) credit at a camera store which I got from an insurance claim. I can spend this on anything, but I am not sure what to get. I have the following:
D100 with vertical grip
Nikon 28-105 F3.5-5.6
Sigma 120-300 F2.8 with 2x & 1.4 ext
Sigma 35-70 F?
SB-80DX
2X 256 memory cards

Question: This is nice as I am "forced" to spend this money. What do you suggest I get?

Thanks
Paul

Hi,

Perhaps some of the following suggestions:
  • Ultra wide angle lens? (Sigma 12-24 4.5-5.6 - app. $700 or UWA Nikkor?)
  • Tripod? (Gitzo?)
  • Camera bag? (Lowepro, Domke?)

Thanks Klaus, sorry I forgot to mention, but I do have a reasonable tripod and a Manfrotto monopod and a nice bag (local brand). What I do not have is a tripod head. Although I do not use a tripod very often, maybe that is something i should look at?

I only got the 17-35mm recently, so at this stage I am ok with this as my widest angle.

I would like to start shooting RAW, maybe I should think about more memory?

Do you mean a portable device to download the photos - if so I was actually thinking about the same thing, or maybe just more memory? See, I've got a laptop, so I don't have a problem downloading often, but I need a more portable device.

iPod is the "new" thing in South Africa at the moment, but after reading some posts it seems that there is still some problems?
I mean a hard drive, of course. Sorry about that.

You don't have enough memeory to take many pictures especially in RAW format. A larger memory card or external hard drive like the Nixvue Vista would help:

A decent light meter like the sekonic l-358 would also be a good purchase and last you through many camera upgrades:

I love helping others spend money :) Good luck.

--Hi Paul,

After you've givven her the flowers you buy yourself a nikon AFS VR 70-200 or the 85mm 1.4...

The perfect shot was already inside your head...

Thanks Andrew, memory or an external hard drive is definately my first priority, although the light meter also sounds good - never used one before though.

Funny feeling that one never has money for this stuff, then suddenly I have the money and now I don't know what to buy....

Good advice Edwin but because this was an ensurance claim for a stolen (old) digital camera, I am luckily forced to ONLY buy at this one camera shop... so except if the wife now wants camera goodies, this is (un)fortunately MY early Christmas.

I was tempted to buy the 70-200VR recently, then got a very good deal on the Sigma 120-300 F2.8. I also forgot to mention in my first post that I also have the Nikon 50mm F1.8, otherwise the 85mm would have been tempting...

The best lens that you will own for the rest of your photography journey. When you are through, sell it and can probably reclaim most of your investment since this lens holds its value very well.

Here is a sample of this lens in shooting landscape, although most people would use it for portrait.
