Received my Sigma 70-300/4-5.6 APO Super II Macro lens Friday. Here are a few of my first attempts with the lens.

Beautiful shots! I particularly like the one with the lizard. What kind is that?

I ordered this lens from Ritz about 3 weeks ago. They tell me it's on 'Special Order'. I see folks posting shots like these and I just want my lens. I'm starting to get a little impatient. (Understatement)

Wow! those are nice pictures... For the first one: did you forget about fill in flash or is it by purpose underexposed?

I am really surprised also by the lack of noise in your 1600iso shots: did you run the picture through a noise reducer (Neat Image or Noise Ninja...)?
Also: how come that you went for a Nikon with all the Canon glasses you have?

A lazy one is all I can tell you about that lizard. I almost hate to post flowers because I just enjoy their beauty but haven't the time to learn their names.

I'm very pleased with the lens and I'm sure you're going to have fun when you get yours.

Frenchie, my grandson doesn't stay still for photos. He's always on the move and I wanted to see what the Sigma could do in available light with a little push. I planned the first picture that way because of the light coming through the windows and doors.

There's noise on shots taken inside by available light but I was surprised that it didn't show up on the outside shots. Not enough blacks or shadows for noise to get a hold on. We went from the inside shots to a soccer game and I forgot to change the ISO to 200 - 1600 wasn't planned.

I used to have a lot more Canon equipment and if the D70 would have been a Canon I would have gone for it. I wish I would have stayed with Nikon years ago. All my glass would now work on my D70. Canon disappointed many loyal consumers by turning our older lenses into antiques. I'll still use film once in a while. If I sold the Canon equipment I couldn't get anything near what I feel it's worth. There's still a lot of good pictures left in those lenses.

Does anyone have any full-size samples of images taken with this lens on a D70?

I've heard good things about it, but mine is very soft - pretty much unusable in my opinion.

Maybe I've got a lemon; if I could see some other's 100% crops I'd have a better idea.

I'll post some from mine tonight.

I used it recently to take a few pics of my son's school sports day.



















In case you wonder if any other kids took part, I take the view that some parents are paranoid about images on the internet. The school itself gets each parent to sign consent for any images published wether it be on the web or in newsletters. Weird world!
 
Thanks for the excellent example. I'm new to digital and I'm just starting to learn how to post process my photos. If it won't take long, I would appreciate it if you would post a brief descripton of your processing to point me in the right direction to for corrections like these.

I do not know what software you are using. But in PS7 there are 2 very useful tools for removing blemishes and such. The clone tool and the patch tool. With the clone tool just work slowly and make sure you are cloning from a similarly toned area. You can vary the size of the brush and work on a very fine spot at a time.

The patch tool is better on larger areas to repair and automatically blends the repair.

The best way to learn is with experimentation. They are both easy tools to master.

PAC40, do you have the same version as mine, Sigma 70-300/4-5.6 APO Super II Macro? I shot some soccer shots on the second day I had this lens but I didn't look at them closely. I'll post a couple when I get home this afternoon ahd we can compare our results with this lens.

You may want to check your focusing mode.

Here's what I use most of the time,
AF Mode: AF-C for moving objects and AF-S for stationary objects

Exposure Mode: Aperature Priority

with this exposure mode I always know my approximate depth of field and it can save a photo if my focus is slightly off. All I have to do is watch my shutter speed and adjust my ISO, and sometime my shutter speed, if necessary.

yes, exactly the same. Love it!

For these sports day shots i used shutter priority but usually keep the camera in apperture priority for the reason you stated.

Heres another I just posted. How sharp is this?!
