Put a pop-up blind on the back deck this morning to try my luck at catching some hummingbird action. Didn’t take long and they were buzzing around the blind like it wasn’t there. I didn’t notice before today how aggressive some of them can be chasing others away from the feeder. Below are a couple of the better captures.

70-200mmVR w/TC-20EII @ 400mm
1/160s f/6.3 at 400.0mm iso200 with Flash

I spent 4 days in Mexico watching and trying to get decent images of Hummingbirds and I walked away with nothing near as good as yours. However, I did get a very good feel for their behavior and what they consider too close by another hummingbird. :)

Having spent considerable time trying to photograph hummers, I know how hard these captures can be. Well done. I would love to see a photo of your blind setup.

I need to get one of those feeders. These are really cool shots. Did you buy or build the blind? How about some shots of it?

Thanks,

Frank

You are gonna get hooked, DJC! Nice job, great color, and just FYI, I don't think you NEED any type of blind. I shoot them sitting within 5 feet of their feeder; they get used to you and could care less! We have even HELD a feeder, and they land right on it that way, and even on our fingers. I look forward to more from you!

Tony,

I saw first hand yesterday the aggressiveness. One of the hummers charges others when to come to the feeder. He charges by so fast you can hardly see him. It’s too bad really, I figure I would have much better photo opportunities if they weren’t fighting all the time. Oh well, it adds to the challenge!

Thnaks for the comments,

Dan

Thanks Jeff, I’ll post a photo of the blind with some related info tonight.

Thanks Frank,

I found the blind in a sporting goods store. It’s marketed as "portable" hunting blind. I’ll post related info tonight.

You are right Marilu, I’m hooked! Thanks for the comments.

Hmmm, didn’t know they were so bold. I’ll have to try sitting right next to the feeder out in the open and see if can get some better shots.

I just saw the hummer shots you posted, they are fantastic. Were you sitting in the open for all of them?
