We have had our coolpix 950 for a only a few days and I cannot figure out how to get a good macro shot. The guide says the macro flower icon in the LCD will turn yellow when the best focus distance is found. My flower has not turned yellow yet! What am I doing wrong?

Please help!

Thanks

Zoom the lens to approximately mid range. There will be a narrow range in which the flower will turn yellow.

The flower on the MONITOR will turn yellow-green. The LCD flower won't change.

The MONITOR is an LCD. Since the top panel LCD is monochrome it seems pretty obvious it isn't going to turn yellow.

The thing I love about this forum is that you all are very helpful, but more importantly, you all have a great sense of humor that keeps me smiling. (sometimes laughing out loud!)

I can speak only of my 990 but I think this principle holds true for about every element of life. When it feels right do it. Don't let a camera second guess you. I don't think I have ever seen any yellow flower or steady focus light. I have seen some great photos from my Nikon.

You will do just fine! Take the picture. Develope it in Photoshop and break your office film guru's heart. Take 50 and keep 5! A good ratio. ;^)

I thought I saw the flower begin to yellow, and then .... the batteries went dead! (Do you remember the TV commercial .... "You'll wonder where the yellow went when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent?") I wondered where the yellow went and it went away with dead batteries. We have gone through seven sets of alkaline AA's while waiting for the Maha charger and NhiM batteries to arrive. I am soooo frustrated, and so is my wife, because we want to learn to use this camera, but the batteries keep going dead when we think we are about to learn something new.

I also ordered a 160 mg Leaxar 8x's card with Jumpshot Cable. After I ordered it, I got to wondering if if the 950 will accept a 160 mb card. I hope so. Anyone know if there will be a problem?

We decided on the 950 because we wanted the split body design but didn't feel the new 995 would be as good. We are very happy with the 950 (except for the alkaline battery life). We will use this camera for quite awhile. Maybe we will get the 995' replacement in about a year.

Thanks for your help

Well, you might have guessed, I have a 950 and love it. You will love the MAHA charger too.

I think any size cf card will work. The outside dimensions are all the same for cf I cards. I use a 128mb Viking card.

Did you get the macro to work?

Ron,

I have to agree with you. One of the fun parts of digital is that it costs almost nothing to experiment. Unless you're using alkaline batteries, huh new950owner? Experimentation is a wonderful teacher.

OTOH, the macro flower has to be in the yellow condition in order to get full macro capability. If not yellow, the camera will only focus down to a few inches. While the flower is in the yellow condition, the 950/990 cameras will autofocus on an object less than an inch from the lens.

Jeez, just an inch! I told my wife it was 6 inches. That is why my flower isn't yellow! ;^)

I finally got the flower icon to turn yellow. Its more of a yellowish green if you ask me. It worked while I was outdoors in good light. I think my problem was I was trying to get it to work indoors in lower light.
