I'm wanting to move my portrait studio sales presentation from PC view or printed proofs to a digital projector (my studio is 100% digital). Does anyone have any recommendations for projectors as well as software to use for the projection?

Thanks,

Grey

Hello, Grey:

I found the website and people at: http://www.projectorpeople.com to be very helpful. They also have educational material on their website and are happy to visit with you on the telephone. I did quite a bit of research and finally settled on a 5.5 pound Sharp Notevision XGA (1024X768) 1200 lumen projector for $1200.US. It works like a champ. I would say that you need atleast XGA resolution and atleast 900 lumens brightness depending on how dark your projection room is. The more resolution you can get, the better. I hope this helps. Happy projecting!

Try Kodak's ProShots: http://www.proshots.com (now only $99.US for permanent license) with excellent features or Pictures to Exe: http://www.winsoft.com ($30. license fee)--an excellent program but with fewer features than ProShots. I use them both and highly recommend both. I hope that helps. Happy hunting!

When you're green you grow..When you're ripe you rot!

Vernon,

Thanks for your post. I agree and already recommended this software earlier in the post.

For reviews by a site that doesn't sell projectors:

Here's a forum site:

I bought a BenQ 6200 for a dual use of presenting my photos and watching movies.

I have also been looking at using a digital projector to look at pictures. The Benq 6200 seems like a good option. How have you set it up for photos? All the information I see is either tilted toward projecting TV/DVD's or to simple business graphics.
How big is your screen?
Does the 6200 have enough lumens in a room with some ambient light?
Do you use the high or low power mode?

How does a projection of a good digital photo compare to a 35mm slide projected to the same size?
Any other comments would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Bob

Hi thre,

Those are alot of good questions. I've had the projector a little over a month but have not used it much yet other than to test it out.

I tried projecting some pictures using Thumbsplus software which is what I use to organize my photos. They looked quite good even with a little ambient light.

I don't have a screen yet as I have not decided where to setup the projector. I have been projecting onto a white wall which I know is less than optimal.

I did give a photo presentation at a club meeting using a project with much less brightness and resolution than the 6200 and it looked similiar to using a slide project although I have not done a side-by-side comparison.

Other than choosing a bright XGA (1024x768) projector I had considered one of the widescreen LCD projectors at 1280x720 because I specialize in landscape photos.

But I opted for 1024x768 because that is the highest afordable resolution available that will match a computer screen exactly in resolution which is one of my criteria.

One thing to look for is the "throw distance". For the 6200 the projector, I have to put the project in front of my seating location to get the screen size to be 5' diagonal which about what I want.

Seems there is less latitude in where you can place the digital projector as opposed to a slide projector to get the size you want.

There is an excellent Calculator on Projector Central that lets you interactively find where you would have to place the projector.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks,
Ric
