Tried the firmware update on two different XP Pro laptops, and on both I get a brief "blue screen of death" and they reboot.

Anyone else had this problem?

Hi Decca

I just ran the update in response to your message and had no problem with it. I am running windows xp, service pack 1.

I'm a tinkerer, so am running service pack 2 beta - that could be the issue.

I've done all the updates as per the Olympus download site.

I'll try restoring a pre-SP2 image backup to my laptop and give that a go.

I just contacted Olympus about a similar issue. When I loaded the XP driver from the CD for the camera control function in order to do the update on the cameras and lenses, a few minutes later, I got a blue screen that said "Bad Pool Caller Error". I don't know if this is like what you're hitting, but I had to do a system restore to get my system to quit crashing.

1.1 update crashes my SP2 beta system... fortunately I have a w2k system... I suppose we ought to complain to Olympus...

If you're using a usb port, are you closing the port prior to shutting off the camera or disconnecting the usb cable?

Yes i have had the same problem. When I spoke with an Olympus rep a day ago they said it was probably an issue with the operating system. I don't know how since I was using version 1.1 prior to the upgrade in Camera Control Mode .

I read later in this post that someone did a system restore. I will try that.

XP SP2 beta is the problem.

I reverted to SP1a and the upgrade went fine.

Well, since you're running a beta, unstable operating system, you can't complain to anyone if the system crash. It is expected to crash. If it wasn't, then Microsoft would call it a release version , not a beta version (ok, that's not entirely true, but it's another problem).

All you should do is to report the crash to MS. But to complain to Olympus, well, that's strange...

..well

..it would give them time to prepare the fix that, more than likely, will be required when SP2 is officialy released.

Fortunately, doing a specific firmware upgrade is a one-off task, so it's worth jumping through hoops (doing a system restore, or whatever) to accomplish it.
