I always thought that candid was a portrait when people were not aware of the camera or being photographer..but why people post photos and call them candid when they are obviously looking straight at the camera and even smiling for the camera?

did I miss something?

since most candid I see, people are looking straight at the camera. what is posed? usualy unless people are models, they will not take a specific pose for the camera so can we consider them all candid??

The subject never knew they were on camera thus the title.

I don't think You missed anything.

I would say any picture you take of someone whom you are not asking to pose would be a candid. It doesn't have to be that they're unaware that the camera is there...

If I'm taking pictures of someone as he's talking to me or going about his merry business cleaning or some such, he may KNOW I'm there and may KNOW I'm taking pictures.... but they're still candids. Of course since he KNOWS I'm there, his behaviour may not be as 'candid' as it would be if he DIDN'T know I was there... but I simply have to pretend that he's being natural the same way he pretends that I'm not taking pictures.

can we say that a photo is candid simply because the person does not want or like to be photographer? he is still not natural thus I don't consider it candid, but that's me :)
... where you can have eye contact while being entirely candid, and
depending on the subject, Joseph Goebbels, brutally candid. Even
more interesting since the photographer was Jewish.

To me this would not be candid as I understood it because I even think that the first photo was posed on top of bieng aware of the camera and looking at it.

what I mean by that is that they don't look natural as if they were doing their everyday business.
