I have Canon Powershot G3 and bought a new IXUS 500 last week. The file number on G3 is 127CANON. The file number on IXUS 500 is 100CANON. This is a problem in sharing CF cards on two Canon DC.

I had some test shot on IXUS 500 with the bundled 32MB CF and the file number is 100CANON. Then I put the 256MB CF, that was used on G3, on the new IXUS 500. The file number for new shots on IXUS 500 changed to 127CANON. I have two 256MB CF and two 32MB CF (bundle with Canon). It is very confusing for the running number mixing with two Canon DCs.

Is there any way to arrange the running number for two Canon DCs on the same CF card?

For example,
running number from 127CANON for G3
running number from 100CANON for IXUS 500

Any idea ?

Bulk rename the files, the EXIF data will contain the original file name and date.

I use Rname-it, a CNET search will find many others.

I had a similar problem

had a G3 and a G5 both in use at the same time and needed to insure file names were always unique.

I use Downloader and manualy add the camera type to the file name.
EX: g5-12356.jpg vs g3-012345.jpg
Then delete all files on CF card before using it in the other camera.

This system is not perfect because I have forgoten to change file names or change back.

The root of the problem is the cameras look at the highest filename number on the card and start numbering new files from there.
If there is no file on the card then the camera uses the internal counter.

Thus, I do not think you can use the same card in 2 Canon cameras with differant file numbers without deleting all files on the card first.
