Bigma @ Bronx Zoo

Just some curves adjustments, shadow/highlights if needed and some local sharpening... Most of the shots came out nice except for the gorillas. I had to fight off 100 kids to get a spot near the glass, and the glass made some of them washed out.. also the light was poor so the shutter speeds were at 1/60 in some of the pics. That wouldn't have been possible without the monopod.

Great images. What processing did you do? Thanks.

Excellent. You make me want to get that lens. I use a monopod at the zoo even with IS lenses.

the monkey house was great! that's a nice shot there... did you use a flash? my girlfriend is freaked out by monkeys, so we didn't spend more than 15-20 minutes in there :)
Nice stuff Matt, when I was there a week or so ago the Gorillas
decided to obscure our view with some unpleasent material...

I liked the Monkey House the best !!

I like your ape pictures because they show the gorilla as having brown eyes. Too often, the apes are pictured with those deeply recessed eyes looking black and lifeless. I usually utilize fill flash to liven my animal eyes, but have been told that gorillas are very sensitive to flash - even daylight fill flash.
Posted some pictures from a day trip to the Bronx Zoo... I picked
up a monopod (Manfrotto 681), yesterday... without it, I would have
never been able to get many of these shots.

I'd say 2-3 stops in many situations... All those gorilla shots were at 1/60(!!) I was really amazed how much stability it gave.

I'd say go with the monopod... I had to literally fight off 100s of kids and parents to even get close to the glass for those shots. At first I was polite and allowed the kids with their parents to get close... but after realizing how damn rude these parents and their kids were, I just forced my way in. I only heard ONE parent say "kids, look out for the photographer... let him get a shot" whereas my girlfriend said she heard many parents complaining about all the photographers getting in the way for their kids' views. Spoiled brats...

I couldn't imagine trying to setup tripod in those conditions.
Thanks.

Thanks... I just got lucky with the timing... we happened to be at that exhibit with the sun behind us... lighting was great.

Unfortunately at the Bronx Zoo they have glass between most of the exhibits now... so flashes weren't an option.
