I've been reading some reviews, the lens gets the thumbs up but mainly from 1.6 factor chipped cameras. Even on Canons web site they mention it was made for chips with above 1. factor.

I was looking for a decent 28 prime but apart from the Canons that don't get very high praise I don't really want to get into Contax or Leica with adapters.

The 17-40 would give me good ultra wide on the 1Ds going through the 28mm range with even a bit of standard thrown in and on my D60 it will give me the 28mm + a bit of tele as a good keep on the camera lens.
I can't really run to the 16-35 and don't need 2.8 on this lens anyway.
Also, does it come with a lens hood?
--I had the 17-35 Canon L lens but was never really happy with it.

Any help please.

Hi Dave,

I use the 17-40 on a 1Ds and I am very happy with the results. You can see some downsized examples in my pbase galleries. Check out the "Favorite Landscapes from all over" gallery. I have identified the lens on all my shots.

Sure the Lens hood is included - it is an L lens. Here you may find a shot, done with that lens at 17 mm on the 1Ds. Every click on the picture will load a higher resolution, the last is 300 dpi for A4 (> 4 Mb jpg). Don't warry about the German text, I named it "The miracle of a forgotten place" - it shows an old chapell in southern Greece mountains under a hugh oak - enjoy it !

Your images are the most beautiful I have seen in a very long time. You should be very proud of your work. I live on Long Island, very, very close to Manhasset, LI, where you had done some photography, and not far from the Old Bethpage Restoration. I have never gone to the latter, but you have motivated me to do so. Thank you for sharing some outstanding images. They gave me great pleasure to view them! Photo Man.

Photoman,

Thank you for the nice compliment. I appreciate the kind words very much.

I used the 16-35L for about a year on my 1Ds, when I finally got fed up with the softness and flaring. So I ordered the 17-40L and was immediately happier. The first copy had an electronic defect, so I returned it for an exchange, and have been happy ever after. I shot brick walls as well as lots of real life photos with both of them and the difference is quite clear. My 1Ds is just past 35,000 actuations and the wide angle zoom sees about 15% of the action. On the D60 it was like 90%...

However, I do miss the extra f-stop, especially the camera does, when focusing.

I find its UWA range (17-24) fine on the 1Ds (I expect some distortion from such a WA), but I don't use it much and have no samples online. From 24mm up I use the 24-70 or 24TS-E. On a D60 it is a very good walkaround lens (as you have seen from other comments).

One of the reasons I bought a 1Ds was to get away from the compromises of using cropped UWA lenses. E.g. WA lenses that come with sensible lens hoods to reduce flare. The 17-40 comes with a hood, but it is a minimal hood (as it needs to be at 17mm) and does nothing to shield the lens, which I often need to shade with my hand if shooting on a tripod.

for equipment see profile.

Thank you all who replied. Certainly some great images taken with the lens.
Lance, great web site, I went to bed late looking through it , Thanks.

Horst. Thanks, great shot with really good detail in the trees.

The nice thing is that it will give me a 28mm on both cameras. I'm not too worried about the edge and the f stop.

I made enquiries with regards to a second lens hood( as i have read that you can use a smaller hood when on the 1.6 factor) they wanted £45!!

Can someone just confirm the model number that people are using and if there is a cheaper alternative please.
