I am new at digital photography and using my F717. I just received my F32x flash from Sony, so I have a few questions. 1) the flash came with instructions to put a piece of clear tape (supplied) on the camera flash shoe to prevent "rub wounds" on the shoe. The illustration is a drawing of a camera that looks like the F717. Is this tape necessary on a F717? 2) Which is the best "Mode" A, B or Manual to start out using on the F717? Thank you.

Also, the instructions I got with the F32x flash and those that came with the F717 camera seem to disagree on whether the "Hot Shoe" should be set to "on" or "off" in the set up mode. Please advise which is the correct setting. Thank you.

The hot shoe refers to the centre pin that typically is used with flashes. The F32X does not have a center pin. So the camera hot shoe setting should be set to off when using the F32X. When you set it to on, the flash likely will not fire.

The tape that you refer to should be used on both the camera and the bracket that came with the flash. It prevents the contacts from shorting out on cameras like the F7x7 that do not mate with the flash shoe contacts. The F828 does mate with the flash and doesn’t need the included cable when used on the camera.

Can anyone tell me why "Mode A" does not show up on my F32X flash (I am using it with a F717)? I can only toggle between "Manual" and "Mode B"

Thank you.

I may be wrong here, but you I believe the F717 has no through the lens measuring capability for the F32X flash. This is why the A mode is not available. No great loss from what I can tell.
