I picked up a cheap (approx $20 US) linear 58mm Hoya polarizer for my 8080 today. Don't bother with the more expensive circular polarizers unless you intend to use them on SLRs. The outer ring that you turn is nice and loose (but not too loose) unlike my other polarizers which feel a little gummed up. Here are some comparisons showing the polarizer set to minimum vs maximum effect.

I usually shoot in aperture priority mode. To adjust for maximum effect, I rotate until I see the shutter speed drop to it's slowest meaning that the effect is most intense resulting in a darkening of the image which the camera must compensate by slowing the shutter speed.

(any blotchiness you see in the sky is cause by jpg compression, not the filter)

Jared, that was a very helpful tip. I just played with my new polarizer very briefly but had trouble seeing a difference with the scene I had (probably because it wasn't needed) but your tip was a way to quantify the change. I'll have to try it out when I get get out in good conditions for using a polarizer.

Thanks for posting these examples and tips, Jared. It's a tremendous help to those of us who are new to all of this.
