Although this is probably not recomended by "BIG BLUE", MY 1g micro made a round trip thru the washer and dryer last night! I let it sit overnight and tried it this morning. It still works.--Mike D

Brian,

I'm leaning toward incredibly stupid, but I swear it happened, and the thing still had the files intact. I am not, however going to see if it would work the second time!!! The fact that it was in the watch pocket of my jeans may have had something to do with saving it. That same thing happened to a lexar solid state C.F. card about a year ago, but there is nothing in there to break, it just needs to dry out, and that card is still working fine. Sign me lucky!

Given IBM's enviornmental limits ( http://www-1.ibm.com/servlet/support/manager?rt=0&rs=0&org=psg&doc=A2483D29EABCD73185256953006F3E5B ) of "Relative humidityOperating: between 8% and 90%" I wonder how conservative their other limits are?

I took the chance and ran my 360M for many hours at 0F (-15C) this wiinter when it got that warm outside. No problems.

I've just bought Casio QV-3000EX. in my country the package is not come with MicroDrive (how's sad!) I'm considering spend some more money buying MicroDrive. The only concern of mine is fragility. After read your post, I will definitely get one without anymore concern. Thank you for your story. Definitely I will try not to copy your event. Any comment on Casio QV-3000ex with MicroDrive you may know please share your view point.

The main suggestion I have is to never take the microdrive out of the camera without a real good reason. The Casio 3000 has a good USB connection so there is rarely a good reason to remove the microdrive.

I'm pretty sure most of the problems with microdrives (and solid state memory) are caused by handling.

Condensation is an important issue when taking picutres in the cold. It isn't just the microdrive that can be harmed if you aren't careful.

Hello,

Just wondering if you have had/heard of any problems with overheating of the microdrive in the G1?

...how has your microdrive been doing since its cleaning :)

Spotless pictures, no doubt!

I have been a regular reader of Canon Talk since October and have never heard of a microdrive overheating a G1. The camera back (where the LCD can fold in) does get warm to the touch after a while, but that is due to the CCD generating heat. The microdrive slot is on the other half of the camera. I have a 1gb m-drive and find the added memory really encourages me to be creative and experimental; to take lots of pictures and learn to be a better photographer faster.

Mike

The older micro drives had a breather hole like the one shown. It allows the air pressure to equalize with weather and altitude. Do the new 1GB drives not have this hole? If they do, you were very lucky indeed as something must have clogged the hole in which case you may want to check to be sure there is no obstruction.

Thanks,

Wilhelm
