Hello all. It's been a while, but I've been having loads of fun with my S7000. I do have a question that many of you may be albe to help me on.

I use PBase for all of my online album pics. With the S7000, using 12M fine, I have 4M plus image files. This also goes with my older 6900Z with 2M plus files.

What is the best way to reduce my images to a size for pbase that:
1. Doesn't take too much away from the picture quality.
2. Maximizes the number of pictures I can keep on the site at any one time.
3. Allows me to do a batch reduction of several images at a time.

Thanks,

Since your a re already in JPG, there is obviously not much point in changing just for resizing. It seems as though IrfanView has been touted as being a very good tool for this type of process. ACDSee is another, but one is no cost and the other uses $. Have you ever tried IrfanView?

Hi Gordon,

Did you know that pbase now has an option for you to automatically resize photos in your galleries? I used it on my galleries and didn't see any degredation in the image quality. Check it out:

You can process images that have already been uploaded to PBase as well as select a default setting for processing new uploads to a PBase gallery. The tools to do this are found on your gallery edit pages.
See EDIT GALLERY

Current Processing Choices

No Change

With this option, no change is made to originals when uploaded. This is the default.

Delete Originals

With this option, original images are deleted, and large size images are used to calculate your disk usage. If no large size exists, there is no change.

Recompress Originals

This option maintains the original image dimensions, but decreases the file size. The images are resaved at quality 70, using ImageMagick.

http://www.hobbycorner.nl (Daughters homepage, in dutch only)follow the link Fotopagina for 4 gallery's online. Not all functions for multy gallery's available yet, but it's getting there. 1 serious (fireworks) and 3 holiday snaps.

For a batch reduction, use the FinePix Viewer,
Select your images, go to File-> Batch Process -> Resize Image
Ive found 1280x 768 to be fine for pbase
Check out my postings done this way from 12Mb RAW images at
http://www.pbase.com/taufiq/inbox
As you notice I also like to post a copyright notice - Also done within Finepix
Select one Image, Go to Image-> Clip/Insert Text....

Finepix Viewer huh? Hmm.... I've never really used that program, although it came with the camera. I will check it out and let you know. Hopefully it doesn't degrade the picture quality too much.

Hi Cassandra!

I just found this out, but have been afraid to try it thinking the quality of the picture, such as pizallation, would be a result. Maybe I should give it a try.

I am, however, mainly looking for something to reduce the size of my images prior to uploading, not after.

It appears that Finepix viewer does it as well as Irfanview, both of which I have and will try them out.

Thanks again,

I suppose that my biggest worry in reducing size prior to uploading is maintaining the quality of the images: loss of color auality, dostortion of images, pixallation, etc.

However, after these responses, I will give some of your ideas a try.

Thanks to you all!

Check out IMatch - an extremely powerful and versatile photo database package. In addition to being the best software out there for managing large numbers of photos, it has great batch processing features including a useful batch resize function.

It can be found at http://www.photools.com

Thanks, Seth!

As I mentioned, my images are from the S7000, in the 12M Fine mode, in which they are between 4M and 5M in size and JPG format. Do you know if this will work well with this?

How long have you been using this program?

Gordon,

I too have an S7000. I routinely resize my images to 800 x 600 pixels before uploading to Pbase. Here are a couple of examples.

Hi everyone...I'm somewhat of a "newbie" to all this and right now I am feeling very confused. I'm thinking about using pbase to show my photos after I get through taking a digital photo course in May (I just bought the s7k). In the past, when I was using my Kodak DC290 (which I recently broke), I downloaded the images to the computer and saved them in "My Pictures" and then used copies of the original image to resize and post (in an album at Ofoto for friends and family to view) or email, etc. I always kept my original images just as were when I downloaded them to the computer and burned them to CDs. Have I been doing this all wrong?

Thanks, Pamela

Hi Pam!

You seem to have a great system going. It's very similar to what I do. However, I am looking for something that will reduce my images in bulk... like 50 at a time. I will still keep the originals, but will put the reduced ones in a different folder.

I've been using pbase for over two years and like it very much.

For those of you who do bulk reductiions of images prior to uploading to pBase, I have one more question....... is it better to do any touch up work with an editing software like PhotoShop before or after the reduction?

Thanks again,

Not wrong........ the question may be what is "right"?

Recent tech articles are reporting CD-R's with major color faults and some unreadable as early as 2 years. after burning. No doubt some of these may have been faulty from the start, but it is changing the way I am now thinking.

I purchased IMatch several months ago and I use it to catalog all of my digital images, including old film and slides now being scanned and archived. This a program well worth trialing!

The question is.....with S7000 RAW files at 12mb and 12mp JPG files at 5mb, how long can one afford to keep "marginal" images?

For now, I have returned all unused CD-R's and ordered Matsui Gold CD-R's. I will continue to catalog on IMatch, burn "keeper" originals to CD-R (which are also cataloged on IMatch) and only keep a minimal number of originals on my hard drive.

I also post process "keepers" in PictureWindowPro (or PS6) and save as 1024 x ?? pixel JPG's for easy reference and viewing. If I want to see all pics of a family member, or all from a trip, or all from a time period, etc., etc., IMatch sorts them and shows me thumbnails (even of those only on CD-R).
I don't know if this is any help, but I hope so.
