--Just thought I'd share with you what a differrence tweaking the White Balance does for the 555. I am usually one of those who leave things on auto and let the camera do the work. But, I was not happy with some of the orangy colors I was getting with indoor pics. Well, changed the white balance and wow, colors are sharp, vivid and lifelike!

--Actually wazza, all I did was adjust the white balance...I did it for Electric lights and I did it another time for flourescents. Left everything in the P mode, although I think sometimes I shut off the flash. Its just that the colors are so much better....I have taken pictures in classrooms for years. With my 35mm they were always dark and dull. With the Pentax they were kind of orangy. Then I tried the fourescent White Balance...Wahla! I am sure more expereinced photographers would have done this right away, but I just love it when I find something else this little camera can do!

I have found that the "auto" white balance setting NEVER gets it right for incandescant lights (ie ordinary light bulbs). However, it seems to get it right for fluros - I tried the various fluro settings (it has 3) and none seemed to get a 'better' balance than auto.

perhaps it is dependant on the individual camera because my 450 and my daughters 550 work very well in auto WB under all conditions. Actually, the 450 seems a bit more natural under incandescant.

Perhaps is the WB o perhaps is the flash, i get that "orangy" colors when using the flash in a fluro environment, usually i get better results using Manual WB rather than the fluro settings.

We talked about the flash issues in another thread, where i posted some samples.

My question: do you btain better results with the fluro sttings or with the Manual AWB?

--I haven't tried the Manual WB, I am embarrassed to say. I just used the Four. setting and also Tungsten for Electric. Both time there was a marked improvement in the pictures...I will try Manual soon. How do I know how to set it? With the histrogram?

Perhaps i feel but (i'm not completly sure) that the manual WB is better in indoor conditions, so i point the camera to a clean area of the ceiling, press display, wait a few seconds, push OK.... and ready!!! Tell me about your experiences, i believe that Manual AWB provides better results, but is needed more experimentation in this topic.

Good luck!!

--ERnesto,

I just tried taking 3 pictures...1 with Manual WB like you said, 1 with AWB and one with Electric setting...all the same picture and I have to say, they looked the same to me. I will have to experiment further to see...Maybe someone with greater knowledge can explain this all better. I just know what I saw with the other pictures but I will try the Manual one like you said further...can I set it so I don't have to go thru the display to get to it each time?
Jeaco

Have you set the white balance by using a white wall, white paper an so on?

Read about it, on this site: http://www.megapixel.net/html/issueindex.php?lang=en

And then, go to: ARTICLES -> CAMERA BASICS -> WHITE BALANCE
