Folks,
I would like to buy a Coolpix 950 (maybe an Oly 2000)

My doubts: how many pics can i take with a CF card (64M) without transferring them on the laptop?

How much does it costs?

What do you think about Coolpix 950 vs. Oly 2000?

Thanks for your advice.

I'm not sure, I have 64 and 32 CF cards on order. The 64 meg cards is just over $200. Given that the 8 meg card is good for about 8 hi-res pics, the 64 should be good for at least 64, depending on your subject matter.

I also find that when I'm running los on available exposures, I can kick my "quality" down to Normal (from Fine) and eke a few more pics out w/ negligible loss.

For common use, the 1600*1200 in normal mode should satisfy anybody. In that mode your camera will hold more than 150 pictures (worst case), and more than 200 if the scenes are not complex (less details, like blurred backgrounds or big blue skies).

Here is a little chart of what you could get on a Coolpix 950 with a 64Mb card.

(Worst case/Best case)

Resolution 1600*1200 1024*768 640*480
Quality
poor ... ... 1000
normal 150/210 330/450 ...
excellent 70/110 160/210 ...
uncompressed 12 X

(... means that I didn't bother to check)

You'll quickly realize that 1024*768 is usually much more convenient than 1600*1200 for common use (web pages, sending via EMail, ...etc...)

I would recommend buying two 48Mb cards instead of one 64Mb, for only $200 in many places, and one 48Mb card is generally far enough : don't forget that you don't have to keep the bad pictures, you can delete them any time. Save your money to buy a wide-angle lens or a x2 lens instead.
