I'm thinking about buying this camera soon, but I'm a little concerned about some of the problems with it that I've been hearing about.

For current owners: If you could do it over again, would you still buy this camera?

Thanks,

Jeff

There is no doubt about it Jeff. To me, this is the best 8 mp camera out there. Sure you'll have inherent problems like purple fringing (which is easily remedied) and, by the way, can be found in ANY digital camera. But you will be getting the finest color renditions bar none, untouchable resolution, and the added attraction of having one of the fastest and finest 28-200 zoom ( f2.0-2.8) Carl Zeiss lenses on the market. All in one sturdy and durable package. pair it up with an HVL-F32X.

Raising kids is like being pecked to death by a duck!

Sony DSC-F707, F828.

If i could do it over again, I would buy two instead of one.

Lots of stuff that are negatives are way blown out of proportion with this camera.

Noise is apparent on the screen of a monitor, but on print it isn't there unless you're going to blow it up to a larger size (ie 8x10 or higher).
PF is easily reduced by using Shay Stephens' Photoshop or PSP fix.

There are only a few things i would change about my camera or wish that it had...

I wish there was a buffer for RAW, but that's ok, I can live without it. I use RAW for my "important shots"
I also wish that the IR mode was more flexible.

O well, i hear that iNova has some great stuff in his ebook, which i plan to buy shortly since I'm going to buy my girlfriend the V1 :)
Hope this helps

Hi Jeff,

I like the F828 for a variety of reasons. It's not a "perfect" camera, but I've really not found a perfect digital camera and I have a pretty good selection of them.

I ues the F828 frequently for closups of fine art when I must hand hold and have minimal setup time. I find it gives me great depth of field, and by shooting RAW and converting with Adobe RAW (PhotoShop CS) I can get dead accurate colors which my clients require. Follow the link below to my site and click on the Jon Anderson Art link. All the fiore clay figures there were shot with my F828. Click on the thumbnails for a reasonably good sized image which will give you a feel for the resolution and color capability.

Here's the story of a brand new 828 owner.

First I'm gonna bore you with a little history.

start of boring history

I've used the FujiFilm 6900Z for over three years, and used it a lot. Made very satisfying pictures with it. Since four years I've been reading about every review that appears about prosumer cams. I have no favor about whatever branch. Many times I came to the conclusion that the perfect camera didn't exist, but it took me two years to realize.

The Fuji had troubles with lowlight focussing, has horrible shot-to-shot times and my one battery made me anxious on LCD use. It had lots of nice things (image burst of 5 HQ images was a nice thing, but took the cam 35 seconds to store them), but I need the speed and good lowlight focussing so what was I to do?

I must admit I underestimated the sony 717. By now, I regret that I didn't buy it long time ago.
end of boring history

Made the 8MP camera comparison (with 717 in mind). The speed and lowlight focus made me decide between Olympus C8080WZ and the 828. Comparing the specifications they were about equal to my favor. The slight image flaws of the sony vs. the shorter zoomrange of the Oly. Went to the store and held both in my hand. No doubt I was going to buy the 828!! Saw the 828 lying next to Minolta's A2 and the look of that cam was a laugh compared to sony's. I probably don't even want to be seen in public holding that A2 ;-)

So the 828 need to be bought. Found a decent one, second hand. I bought it only one day ago, but since then I've been shooting with it, like Forrest Gump kept on running. I'm flabbergasted with the hologram AF assist in complete darkness, and also by the shot-to-shot speed even using flash. For those who haven't read my boring history part, I came from far being used to wait for 9 seconds to be able to do another flash shot.

So I've had a lot of fun already. The lcd gave me nice realtime information about parameter changing and in combination with the swivel body I don't need the EVF anymore. Using the menu was very logical and I doubt that I'm ever going to be using the usermanual. Add the excellent battery power to that and I was about to think that my perfect camera actually does exist!

That was until looking at the images on the monitor.

By now I've seen all my snapshots and captures so far. Its too fast to say anything about color reproduction and stuff. Noise I don't even look for, I won't make lots of very large prints and know what software can do about that. Off course I searched for PF/CA at 100% magnification. I found some. Wasn't surprised, I think I broke every rule of preventing it and I knew it was 'part of the deal'. There is no perfect cam, right? Sizing down to 5 or 3 MP (those are my printing sizes, I don't actually need the 8MP) made it hardly visible.

At last I was curious about what that famous Shay's action can do. Bought it. Used it. Smiled. This thing does what the Olympus probably does in-camera! By now I'm actually wondering why this 828 would not be the perfect camera for me. The only thing that could trouble me is the size, for taking it on holidays. Then again, its a camera, not a pocketknife.

To answer the question: I don't regret buying it, but keep in mind that bought it only yesterday.

no doubt

I got mine 2 months ago. I was a bit affraid by what I read in this forum (mostly noise and pf).

Now after 800 photos, I can say I really like this camera : handling, manual zoom, zoom range, shutter lag, night shots, movies,...

I found out that noise and pf are not that bad for me : very few photos badly impacted and among the photos I like even less (that makes around 5!), I decided to postprocess for that reason.

hope this help

Hello Jeff:

Yes, without question...If you have a F707 or F717 and know it thoroughly, then you might be able to skim thorugh the manual...Otherwise read the manual with a passion...The F828 does have a learning curve to achieve its greatness...Take the time to invest in learning it and the camera will reward you immensely...

Test result shows that, if you use F stop 6.3 (or lower) and within the focal length 50 to 135mm, your chance to hit the PF problem is minimal.

ps. My 828 has been upgraded to firmware v2.0

I have a 717 great Camera.
I would not sell it for anything.

I have 828 and I would not sell it either.

Both are great cameras-- both have strengths and both have weaknesses.

So yes "I" would buy this camera, but you need to make your own mind.
Look at some of the 828 galleries.
Hope this helps.

Jeff,

I understand you get concerned from the "multiple" problems that the camera is supposed to have. Don't get confused the critics. This is a superb camera.

I own a F828 and a dSLR D70 (as well as a Nikon F100 35 mm) and the F828 in my opinion is the most innovative and well designed camera I have put in my hand ever.

The quality of the lens, 8 MP, quality of the contrast/color/exposure is extraordinary and comparable with any other dSLR camera once you learn how to use it. Working at ISO64 and ISO100 will give you images with no noise affecting your image. At ISO 400 you will need to use a noise reduction program for some shoots but the noise in general is quite nice looking in the F828. CA is only a problem in some situations and certainly it has never affected my photography (easy to remove in post-processing)

From my view what sets the camera apart is how you handle it. You will get use to it very quickly and it will become part of your hand an extension of your eyes. This is critical for your to enjoy photography ... you will feel that with the F828 you can do anything that crosses your imagination, quick and fast focusing in the scene and composition without having to bother with camera settings.

Without hesitation I will say that this is my favorite camera, and certainly I would buy it again without any kind of hesitation.

I would do it over again without hesitation. I own a 707 as well and I thought I'd never stop wanting to use it. Well it took about 1.5 days to completely fall in love with nearly every improvement in the 828. I don't want to put it down. It's very fast. The mechanical zoom is amazing. Did I mention that I love my 828. Buy it now.

Look at the pictures...you'll get lots of great pictures, without even breaking a sweat. :) It does everything you want and does it quickly...well, RAW is a bit slow.

I had a Digital Rebel

I now have an 828

I'm very happy with the 828...especially the colors and sharpness of the images.

Lin: I always read your posts( as well as your site) with great interest. You're a real asset to this site, and that photo is worth a thousand words!!

Scott,
Why have your disconsider the Rebel and changed to 828?
