I am getting an A1 soon and was wondering if the VIVITAR 730 AFM I used with my Maxxum 5 will work with the A1 as it did with the film SLR. I mean TTL metering, bounced flash, ADI adn so on...
Any help.
Thanx
Peter

I went to the Vivitar website and I couldn't find anything regarding compatability with any of the Minolta DiMage cameras. But if it worked fine with you Maxxum 5 I can't see why it wouldn't with the A1. I have a Maxxum 5 and an A2 abut I use the 3600HSd with both cameras. You could send an email to Vivitar and Minolta asking them for help.

Most likely it will only fire at full power, if at all. A1 program flash uses a pre-flash to meter the scene and determine flash power for proper exposure. Minolta D type flash units suppoirt pre-flash and work with the A1. Sigma and Mentz also have introduced new flash units that provide the pre-flash. By the way the D stands for Distance and means the flash can support the ADI flash control mode. ADI also requires a pre-flash, even with film cameras. This is covered in the manual (available for download so you can preview prior to purchase.)

The Vivitar 730 failed to work with my original D7. I would guess that it's no more compatible with the A1.

If you're on a budget, then consider any of the Auto-Thyristor models suggested in this forum. Otherwise, for full TTL & ADI compatibility, stick with the Minolta, Sigma or Metz flashes.

Yeah, guys...it really does not work. All the Vivitar does is to blast the hell out of what's infront of it. I get completely bright, almost white pic. no communication between the flash and the camera... Too bad I like bounced flash so much, I'll have to buy a new unit

Differences in circuitry would be needed. A2 (info at M site) indicates levels of backward compatibility with older M flash units. Otherwise, expect only full power and you must then meter shots and shoot in manual mode, if A&S settings can handle the shot.

My D7 uses my 3500xi, but inevitably I shoot straight up and add a slave. Often works well. Non-M branded non likely to give features unless such compatibility is stated on other brands website.

I think you can use the other equipt. if you just run a short bank of tests and consider adding slaves - I've been satisfied.
Good Luck
