Need help before I go totaly mad!!

Canon 16-35 2.8L or 17-40 4L or a cheap Sigma... no, no Sigma this time, I think...

Most people and all of my friends would say I'm nuts for even considering any of the first two.

My only reasons for the 16-35 is that I just simply want it and that sometimes I "need" the extra speed, you see I don't like using flash.
The 17-40 is, to my knowledge, a bit sharper and half the prize.

On top of this I'm loosing my job next month but insted I'm getting some money. I can afford the 16-35 but thats it, then it's water and bread until I find a new job, is it worth it? PLEASE, HELP ME!! I can't sleep at night...

You're nuts if you buy any lens knowing your job will be gone soon.

Get another job, then let us know which lens you get.

Good luck!

It's the picture, stupid! ;-)

Jobs are more plentiful than they have been in the country - for most of our history. Don't believe the news...the jobs are out there, if you want to work.

So that said, I have the 17-40L and love it on my 10D. I am just getting back into it after being on the photography sidelines for 8 years. I had owned cheaper Canon lenses in the past and am blown away with the quality of this new lens. I just picked up the 70-200 4.0L as well and am beginning to shoot with it. It appears to be another great lens. Either way, I am convinced by looking at many of the photos posted here and on other websites...."it ain't the camera that makes the photo....it's the photographer".

Good luck with the job hunt!

Chuck

I agree with Chuck, I also really like the 10D+17-40 as a combo(got mine a month ago for $700 @B+H)...and my next lens will be the 70-200 f4L.

btw..add $100-150 to the cost for a good UV filter.

Run, romp and play daily

in your case I would take a cold shower and thinkabout something else than photography for a while. Then go back to it with a renewed perspective. Don't know your family situation, but they may need you more than you need a new lens. Just my 2 cents.
Hope you find a new job soon, all the best. Pat.

if you know your losing your job - get the cheaper one.

you would feel pretty dumb lugging around something expensive, with no new money coming in. unless you sell the stuff you shoot. if you live in the USA, like me - then finding a new job is still really tough. as it is, you may want to forgo the purchase altogether until you do get a new job. or use a basic prime for wide.

really? who tell's you this? it took me 2 years plus to find a new job. other's are taking even longer. you can't get the cheapo jobs as it's been sent out of the country. the next step up is taken over by imigration. beyond that, it's very, very, very hard to find a job that doesn't require 10 years of experience in it.

If you must spend the money, get the 17-40L or the Sigma 15-30. I have the 16-35L, but many have gotten bad copies.

The jobs are out there, in the IT field a lot of companies are moving to contract work. I managed to get 2 offers in the same week both giving me a 20-25% raise over my previous position. If you're in IT, check into contracting companies, many will also transition you to full time after the project.

(PS: I was out of work for about 3 months with light searching)

I have not tried all 3 but I have the 17-40 and I love it. Its indeed sharp n contrasty and focuses fast too with 10D. Offers weather-resistant construction too.

Good luck with your decision, I must say its a hard one !!!

a few jobs might be out there - but there are 10,000 people knocking on that one door to get it.

not to mention not that many are in IT, nor have the money to train.

right now many people are searching, for years, looking for anything. nothing is out there. jobs that highschool kids were doing, adults are doing - it's that bad. some how i got lucky and found a place, otherwise i'd still be home looking for something that didn't have a min of 5 years experience in some obtuse thing.

At least the first signs are there that money is moving again. No sense that it will stay that way of course, but from a finalincial perspective, there is serious money moving around.

YMMV, I would never make a substantial capital outlay as I was being layed off, but that's me. For some, it is good therapy.

Wait and see on the economy, but some serious dudes are in agreement that things are looking a lot better this year.
Am I nuts...?
Losing your job,
buying an expensive lens
in a down economy.

Repeat the question, please?

...I'd take a long, hard look at the Tamron 17-35 XR Di.

I don't have the lens myself (I have a 17-40L), but i'm now a starving post-grad student so if I were buying a lens today, I would probably go for the Tamron... or the NEW Sigma 17-35 EX DG maybe.

These lenses will give you the UWA and the extra stop (at least on the short end).

Just my 2c worth... it's all I can afford right now. :)
