Who loves your D70? Positive sound offs only - raise your hand!

I have been looking at all those posts for quite some times and often find them very misleading.

As someone looking for information before buying I remember the 300D franzy and some people making huge issues about small stuff and see the same happening with the D70.

It is my 5th digital camera. I had a Kodac, 2 Sony and an Olympus before. With all of them I took some good shoots and some bad shoots.
My first Kodac back in 1997 cost me U$1250 for a 1Megapixel camera.

I now have a D70 (which costed a bit less 7 years later) and find it to be the BEST camera I ever had. Not that I only take good pix with it's. It just like the others cam I had.. some good some bad.

BUT it's such a pleasure to handle, to shoot with and be able to select the right setting for the right condition that I am taking about 10x more photos with it everytime I go out. And it's so FAST! (never heard anyone complaining about that yet....LOL!)

I still need to learn a lot, but this is the camera that makes me want to do it and improve (and it would probably be very similar if I had bought a 300D I guess).

So indeed a bit of positiveness is really needed and I often found this forum filled with aggressivety and very subjective comments (meaning that it really does not help for others to make a decision or solve their problems).

I - with now 600+ shots in 3 days - didn't have any issue that I did not see in my previous cameras and was not able to compensate for. But I see all the benefit and extra pleasure I am getting!

Well that's all for today. Didn't dare to start a thread on that, but happy that someone asked!

Purchased it this Monday, played a lot, even downloaded a custom curve. For me this is an upgrade into DSLR 4 years experience of digital p+s (SONY CyperShot DSC-70, then Canon PowerShot S50), with combined photoexperience of 30 years. My last SLR was Soviet-made ZENITH-E 20+ years ago.

Nikon D70 offers plenty of opportunities and settings far exceeding my current skill level, there are things to learn, but once learned, they appear amazingly well thought of and convenient. It seems that whenever you ask yourself about - if the camera can do this or that, and then check it or the manual, you inevitably find the feature is included!
Best things for me:
  • responsivenes, instant power on;
  • wide angle of the kit lens;
  • flexibility and customization potential of the camera (just in case my skills grow);
  • image quality (excellent);
  • high ISO powers;
  • long battery life;
Accessories I already purchased:
  • LowePro Nova 2 side bag;
  • Nikon real leather camera coffer (looking like made for a gun - couldn't resist a temptation when saw it);
  • a tripod;
Of all the alleged setbacks reported at this forum (moire, traffic light effect, green blooming, green cast, dark shadows) I so far have seen none.

I am very happy I decided to wait over for something "next" when Canon 300D appeared, and for me D70 is a camera I dreamed about for years!

  • lens protective UV filter;

I wish I could say that I do, but Nikon have problems delivering the kit lense, so I'll have to wait a couple of more weeks before I get the camera :-(

To make it even more frustrating, my favourite camera dealer yesterday offered me to buy the camera, and then only pay the price difference for the kit and get the lens when it arrives, but what good is a DSLR without a lense??? I don't know anybody from which I can borrow Nikon glass in the meantime...

Has anybody of you read the Calvin and Hobbes comic, where Calvin is waiting for his hat with propeller being delivered? I feel just like Calvin...

But in a couple of weeks, I'm sure that my reply to this thread would be somewhat different
Just wanted to see how big a post could get with only current D70
owners who are happy with their D70.

Cheers!

Might be worth a try: Maybe your dealer would lend you some lens? Some dealers do so, eventually you can get one from him (or another dealer.)

Got mine Tuesday in the UK.

This camera is superb.

Got the 70-300mm D, which kicks ass
and the SB800 which I seriously recommend if you are looking a top end flash.

D70 rules.

nuff said.

Or look at the 50mm 1.8 prime for $100. I purchased it for indoor low light pics of my little one. I'm in the opposite boat and have a lens and no camera. Doh!

or the not so sharp 70-300G lens at $110. If you're on a budget and need a telephoto lens which will complement the kit lens.

Had mine since Monday evening, unfortunately I work full time so I can only really test it on the weekend.

In the meantime, if anyone's interested, I have started posting some early shots here: http://forbesweb.typepad.com/photos/nikon_d70_/ however, as I say in the album, please don't judge the camera according to my mistakes! :D

I have the 24-120 AF-S VR lens instead of the kit lens. All of my pictures are underexposed, but I haven't tried to work with exposure compensation yet. Hopefully, this weekend I will have some time to play.
